Whats your name and where do you come from?
My names L'il Tuffy from San Francisco and I have been making posters for 10 years and just recently completed my 500th poster.
So you've been touring round quite a bit on this trip, Liverpool and London the other week and now Barcelona, is it back home after this?
After this festival I fly straight to Tenessee for Bonaroo festival, I do that every year, then I have about a month off before I go to Chicaigo for Flatstock, I come back where I have a solo art show, then its Outside Lands in San Francisco
What started your interest in Screen printing?
I screen printed while i was in university, but i never took a class. I was an art student and we used to break into the screen print studio late at night and we'd print tshirts. Then I did internet design for a long time then about 2002 I made a gig poster for my birthday party, I was putting on shows at the time. I met the Firehouse and started doing work with them. I had always collected gig posters so I guess thats why I started doing it and I didn't have a job at the time, I just thought it would be something fun and then it slowly became a full time job.
Can you go through the process of your work, you print at home too right?
I work pretty fast, when I get a job I listen to the band for like an hour or two while looking at different images, go on their website, listen to song lyrics and look and listen for something that stands out and base all my imagery off that. I do most of my work on the computer, I do a little bit of sketching and I'll just scan that in, I work in mainly Illustrator and Photoshop then I made my films and get ready to start printing.
You recently did 60 prints for St Vincent for their tour, what was that like?
Doing that many prints is kinda intense, especially if they're all kinda the same style, I'll use the same typography, all of them are based off song lyrics and it was pretty hectic. But because I chose a simple format and they are all 2 colours, it ended up going fairly quickly but still when it came to the end of it I was mentally and physically exhausted
What new posters have you got lined up?
I just finished a bunch before i came here for The Dwarves, I have a few for when I get back, Mariachi El Bronx for Bonaroo, I have an Avett Brother show in San Francisco, then I have a lot of art prints lined up for Chicago and im organising a Twin Peaks show in San Francisco too which i better start working on too.
