Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile have collaborated on a forthcoming album and just announced a US tour for 2017. Their back up band is called Sea Lice and includes Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag), Rob Laakso (The Violators, The Swirlies, Mice Parade), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) and Katie Harkin (Sky Larkin, touring member of Sleater-Kinney and Wild Beasts). They are set to play three shows in Chicago; Oct. 26 at (surprisingly) Rockefeller Chapel, Oct. 27 at Thalia Hall and Oct. 28 at Empty Bottle.
Carve It Out (Sky Larkin)
I found Love one night, on a bus from Leamington Spa to Banbury - I carved it out from between the notes, teased love out from my long-term memory - standing in crowds, tensions staged, harmonics, moaning guitars.
I heard Love fleetingly, on a bus from Leamington Spa to Banbury, from 2:35 to 2:59 - longer than an orgasm, but only that.
Love is defined by absence, unfulfilment, insatiation. Love is that niche, that unoccupiable space. Carve it out.
Feeling wistfully nostalgic as I do.
Vessels - Mobilise
A five-piece electronica act with a post-rock edge hailing from Leeds, Vessels makes electronic music through a transcendental gaze. Their latest track “Mobilise” resonates of that otherworldly feel, with its trickling synths and layering vocal sear serving as the opener to their latest full-length effort “The Great Distraction”. Speaking as why the track was the perfect candidate to open their album, the band had this to say:
‘”Mobilise’ feels like the heart of the album and the band. It has an energy that captures everything we're about with its locking polyrhythms and sense of yearning - full of hope and melancholy. We definitely get the shivers when we play it live, and the bliss out section in the middle is a highlight of the set.”
Featuring the haunting architecture of the now-dilapidated Red Sands Forts rising out of the water, its video reflects both the mystery and wonder of the behind the band’s latest track. You can check out “Mobilise” alongside previous cuts and album singles “Erase the Tapes” featuring American crooner John Grant and the beaming glow of “Deeper In a Sky” featuring Sky Larkin’s Katie Harkin:
