New research suggests that popular sugar substitutes might be aging your brain faster than sugar itself, with high consumption linked to a 62% faster decline in memory and thinking skills.
A major eight-year study involving over 12,000 adults has uncovered a troubling link between widely used artificial sweeteners and accelerated cognitive decline. Researchers found that individuals with the highest intake of sugar substitutes—averaging the equivalent of just one diet soda per day—experienced a drop in brain function comparable to an extra 1.6 years of biological aging. The study, published in the journal Neurology, tracked performance in memory, word recall, and processing speed, revealing that those who relied most on these low-calorie alternatives saw their cognitive abilities fade significantly faster than those who used them sparingly.
The findings were particularly striking for adults under the age of 60 and those living with diabetes, groups that often turn to sweeteners like aspartame, saccharine, and erythritol as perceived healthier alternatives to sugar. While tagatose was the only sweetener not associated with negative effects, others commonly found in ultra-processed yogurts, energy drinks, and diet sodas were tied to steeper drops in verbal fluency and overall mental sharpness. While the study highlights an association rather than direct causation, it serves as a wake-up call for consumers to reconsider the long-term impact of "diet" labels on neurological health.
