Some girl at my school said I couldn't claim to be apart of "the weird kid" community because, and I quote, "You're a cheerleader and good looking and popular, and you can't like and make content of certain 'weird' fandoms, just because they're mainstream now. Those spaces were made for us to GET AWAY from people like you." (Context, I reposted a reel on insta about being a weird kid and she saw it)
Bitch, I was unpopular as shit as a younger kid. I was the quiet kid in the back corner all of middle school. I was a Wattpadd and Ao3 girlie at the ripe age of 9. I got made fun of for liking anime, gacha, FNAF, etc. I roleplayed MHA, Demon Slayer, and Marauders at 12. I got ostracized for being openly queer in a super conservative Catholic middle school.
And then I watched as all this stuff I liked went mainstream during and after covid. I watched the shift. And want to know my reaction?
I was happy. I welcomed those people into fandom spaces. I talked to them and educated them on my interests, and they became nicer people who I could bond with. In the process of growing up, I opened myself up more and got into things like cheerleading.
So yes, I may have done cheer for 4 years, I may be liked by a lot of people at school, but I'm allowed to like all the things you say I "can't".
I'm a cheerleader, but I also have a high GPA, and I take all honors and AP courses. I'm a cheerleader with a tumblr account, who posts the weirdest shit on earth about dead wizards, supersoldiers, alien wars, and more. I'm a cheerleader who does theater and dance, and has been in a ton of musicals. I'm a cheerleader who has an anime watchlist in the hundreds. I'm a cheerleader, who if I had the money, would have 15 different homemade cosplays right now. I'm a cheerleader who dresses in alternative styles and tries goth makeup when I'm at home.
Just because someone is a hot cheerleader doesn't mean they're bad in school, or only like boys and pink glitter. Just because someone is nerdy doesn't mean they can't like sports or that they're a teachers pet. People have these things called layers. You become the problem when you start putting people into boxes, and say "Oh you can't like this, because you do that other thing," because you can't look past stereotypes.
Honestly shut up until you grow up.
i hate school for making me always feel so ugly.
