Is shipping bon-canon M/M ships activism?
Yes.

I'm asking because back in the day I thought shippers were shipping non- Canon MM ships because of the lack of Gay or Bi Main characters in media. I thought it was a way from the fans to ask for more reprensation in TV shows and movies. And then when canon Gay or Bi Main Characters started appearing in TV, those same shippers ignored them and continued to focus on the non-canon ones.
That's what made me realize that for a lot of shippers, it isn't about representation in media but about their ship. Which is fine btw, anyone should be able to ship what they like.
What I don't like is when those shippers act like their shipping non-canon MM is some sort of activism, when they do nothing to "promote" the canon relationships.
The one example that comes into my mind is the 911 fandom and Buddie shippers sh*tting on another canon MM couple in 911 Lone Star, Carlos and TK, instead of supporting the characters. I've seen so many of them calling TK and Carlos "Walmart Buddie" and other names.
In the MCU, I'm thinking about the lack of popularity for the first Canon Gay character in the MCU: Phastos, even though he had a husband and a kid and was part of a movie with Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie.
