Portrait of Louis XIV (1638-1715), King of France and Navarre
Artist: Claude Lefèbvre (French, 1632-1675)
Date: 1670
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Palace of Versailles, Paris, France
Louis XIV
Louis XIV (1638–1715), known as the "Sun King" or "Louis the Great," reigned as King of France and Navarre for 72 years—the longest verified rule of any sovereign monarch in history. He was the ultimate symbol of European absolutism, centralizing state power and moving the royal court to the magnificent Château de Versailles.
Ascending the throne at just four years old, Louis initially ruled under the guidance of his mother, Anne of Austria, and chief minister Cardinal Mazarin. Following Mazarin's death in 1661, he took personal control of the state. He famously established an absolute monarchy, operating on the principle of the divine right of kings, which consolidated political and administrative power.
Earning the moniker "The Sun King" (Le Roi Soleil), Louis XIV was a massive patron of the arts, literature, and science, developing the court at Versailles into the cultural epicenter of Europe. Through major conflicts like the Nine Years' War and the War of the Spanish Succession, he expanded France’s borders and secured his grandson's position on the Spanish throne. His transformative influence firmly established the French colonial empire and propelled France into a position of unmatched military, cultural, and economic preeminence.

Truth, Time and History
Artist: Francisco Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746-1828) Date: ca. 1804-1808 Medium: Oil on canvas Collection: National Museum, Stockholm, Sweden
Description
History is a witness when Time reveals the Truth. These concepts are symbolized by a woman writing, an elderly man with an hourglass, and a woman, who is usually naked. In Goya’s painting, the standing woman represents Spain as well as Truth. She holds a sceptre, and a book, the constitution Spain adopted in 1812 during its war against Napoleon. The twofold symbolism is designed to underscore the legitimacy of the new constitution.
