Evidence suggests that Myrtle Beech and other rainforest plants have grown in Australia for over 70 million years. Victorian rainforests formed shortly after the continent drifted from the south pole some 50 million years ago. Toolangi forest is remnant of the super-continent, Gondwana. The name Toolangi is an aboriginal word meaning tall trees. The age of the Toolangi's oldest ecosystems are estimated to be ≥40 million years old. We need to hold on to the natural history of this forest which far exceeds the last 140 years of logging in the area. These forests are the most carbon-dense in the world. They consist of Myrtle Beech root systems that are thousands of years old and evolved 80 million years ago. Its Eucalyptus trees can be hundreds of years old, some taller than redwoods. Toolangi is home to some of the most endangered species in the world and certainly the most unique. This forest is vital to our existence and for the existence of a healthy planet.
