He's right. Your life belongs to someone else, to anyone else. But what if you think no one wants it? Here we delve into what a life means, to this world to the people around you. If you have your own life it's you that gives it meaning, but that isn't necessarily true is it? Your life is given meaning through the people and things that react to you and interact with you. Without those, your life is nothing. This is saying that you affect the world, whether you are sitting on a couch in despair or out there going to dull work or fighting a disease or whatever it is that people do. You exist therefore you make a difference. Your life happens to everyone else so it makes sense that your death would too. He says that we are affecting people even when we think we aren't. There are people who look after you, people who will notice you are missing, and most of all, people in the future who will never have interacted with you, people whose lives belong to you just as your life belongs to them. This is why people find murders so horrifying: because this persons life was in your hands and you simply decided that it was yours to end. It forcibly takes that life and removes it from every other person they have or would interact with. That life never belonged to one person. That life belongs to every person you interact with, it is not one persons to claim, to deprive the rest of humanity from ever experiencing it. In the same way, when you take your life, you have stolen something from the rest of the humanity that cannot be replaced in any form or fashion. You have deprived the world of its belongings and that's not yours to take. You can't give that back any more than the man who murdered his wife can give his wife back to her children, her family, her coworkers, that teenager on the street who liked her coat, the person on the corner who asked for change from her and didn't get it, the tree who processes her carbon dioxide in order to live.... there are thousands of situations in which you matter. You make a difference in both good and bad ways and there is never going to a replacement for you. Never. It's not your choice to take your life, it's the world's. Don't steal yourself from what you are meant to do. And in case you were wondering, what you are meant to do is a hell of a lot more than you think. Sherlock Holmes thinks every life is precious and belongs to each and every person who comes in contact with it. And if Sherlock Holmes, cleverest man I know, thinks that of himself, then you should think that of yourself too.
