"Okay, let's see..." Sarro scratched at the back of her neck with a foreclaw. "When we're still hatchlings, we secrete a foul-smelling substance that was originally meant to drive off predators, but nowadays makes a very useful cooking aid."

Taris shook her head. "Yeah, no, that one's bullshit."

Sarro chuckled. "Caught me." She took a sip from her drink. "What gave it away?"

"You're well past hatchling age, and you still smell like shit."

"Oh, how DARE you!" Sarro's spines bristled with exaggerated indignation, but she couldn't keep the smile off her face.

Taris laughed, full and bright. "Okay, okay. My go. Humans have an organ that does nothing, except sometimes explode and kill us."

"No way. You'd never have gotten off-planet if your own organs were blowing up." Sarro's grin faltered as Taris's grew. "No..."

"Yup!" Taris lifted her shirt, revealing a faint scar on the side of her abdomen. "Called the appendix. Mine burst a few weeks after I left Earth for the first time, Doc Jackson had to go in and take it out."

"You're kidding. And every human has this exploding organ? How did you survive as a species?"

Mostly Mezzo Mondays: a recurring (though not weekly) feature where, on Monday nights, I blog a list of the upcoming broadcasts that have caught my eye on World Concert Hall.

This week (if all goes according to plan) we get a Sonia Prina baroque double header—one concert opera recorded months ago, one to be broadcast live with a stellar cast—plus what looks like a very lovely Mozart and Haydn concert with Sandrine Piau.

Sandrine Piau sings works by Haydn and Mozart with Il Giardino Armonico. Live broadcast on Dwójka (Polish radio station), Friday the 27th.

The baroque opera seria Achille in Sciro by Domenico Sarro was recorded at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli in November with Sonia Prina in the title role. It was previously scheduled for broadcast on Rai Radio 3, then bumped for reasons unknown to me. It’s back on the Rai broadcast schedule for this Saturday the 28th.
