why is nobody talking about how adorable this little scene is from the finale?
Kasey Sankey started the show as just a racist inmate. Later in season 4 we get to see that Sankey does have some empathy for people regardless of their race. (Like when Poussey died and Sankeys gang started harassing her friends and she had them back off. As well as calling the women nice when she tried forming a protest with the other groups of the prison.) Soso has been a very compassionate person throughout the show even though she’s been beaten down countlessly.
Although we never get to see these characters at the Ohio prison from when they first got there, it’s cute to imagine how Soso and Sankey developed a friendship that later became a crush. I can just imagine Soso calmly talking to Sankey and explaining why racism is wrong and teaching her to be more nice to other people. Sankey who probably has never had someone try to calmly talk to her like this, understood completely and started to realize the way she treated people was wrong.
We can see that is likely the case, as Sankey runs over to Soso in a friendly manner shouting “Hey Asia girl!” Soso just reacts by calmly saying, “you gotta stop calling me that.” As if they’ve had many conversations before. Sankey explains she’s reading a book called ‘Rising Out Of Hatred’ which implies she’s been trying to change for the better. She cares about becoming a better person.
Immediately after we see Sankey show some romantic interest in Soso by reading her a haiku she wrote. She even fumbles over saying it’s a Japanese type of poem because she’s afraid she’ll offend Soso.
The poem says “I think I like you. In fact, I know I like you. I’m vulnerable.”
It’s so cute to see Sankey take this type of interest in Soso considering that she’s a different race. Her interest in Soso shows some character growth. She doesn’t care that Soso isn’t white, but likes her for her.
Soso seems to respond positively by smiling and saying “I can appreciate that.” Soso seems to be happier than when we last saw her in Season 5. She was still mourning for Poussey and didnt seem to care much for herself anymore. In this short scene we can see she’s doing better than she was before and can even smile and laugh with Sankey.
Although Poussey and Soso were the cutest together, you can’t help but appreciate these two. I would’ve loved to see where their friendship or relationship went.
