A short and simple Sanchin foot placement analysis.
I’ve been digging into Sanchin stance a lot lately, including talking to practitioners I know from other styles, reading recommendations on the web, experimenting with different concepts/methods, and reading The Way of Sanchin Kata by Kris Wilder.
I tend to agree with Mr. Gambrell in this video: I find it much better to keep the back foot straight. In testing both methods, as well as the degree of turn of the front foot (I prefer 45 degrees, but have been told both no more than and no less than), I find myself able to be much more stable with the back foot straight.
That said, I haven’t trained with it that way from the beginning, so your mileage may vary.

KATA Outer form Inner form
KATA has some parts that are visible and some that are invisible. The former is called the outer form, and the latter is called the inner form. When you start learning KATA, your goal is to learn KATA as an outline. And little by little, the inner form begins to make . The ratio of the outer form to the inner form is 8: 2, 6: 4, 5: 5 ... 2: 8, and finally the inner form becomes KATA itself.
The outer form can be learned through the eyes and words, but the inner form is invisible, and the explanation of words alone has its limits. Therefore, you need to receive a skill from a person who can form an inner form, a teacher, etc. By having the person perform the technique, the information of the inner form is transferred to the body of the person who was hung.
A person begins to memorize the information of the inner form in the body by being able to perform the technique many times. That is the so-called "acquisition of physical knowledge by touch". And in martial arts karate, the memory of this information in the body and the physical knowledge are very important. This is because the greater the amount of information learned through the body, the greater the proportion of internal forms. And as the proportion of inner form increases, the original meaning of Kata training begins to be understood. In that case, the consciousness of "because I have to practice Kata" will change to the consciousness of "I want to practice Kata all the time if I have time". And I will no longer analyze the meaning of KATA with my head. You will be able to practice KATA itself as it is, and it will be a lot of fun.
The reason why KATA should never be changed is that KATA has an invisible inner form in addition to the outer form, and that inner form is contained in the KATA as information. Therefore, it is effective to imitate KATA of a person who can make an inner form at first. Then, by receiving teacher's skill several times, the body begins to wake up, and the body itself feeds back to the brain, and it becomes possible to recognize the reality of the inner form. And at some point, the outer form and the inner form match. At this stage, we can finally move on to full-scale training.

Moment of truth. Getting kicked in the groin during #sanchin 'testing'. This was done at the 1st #tsuruoka #karate nationals way back in 1997. This was a #uechiryu system demonstration given to the Father of Canadian Karate, the late Osensei Masami Tsuruoka. This is the first time seeing this video from 23 years ago. Wow, time flies! #uechiryukarate #karatecanada #karatelife #practicalkatabunkai (at Nova Scotia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9zCT3bJc8Q/?igshid=ijb68xk9vxt9
