Glenlivet 1976/2001 #5521 Sa Very Limited Edition (45 %)

Yesterday the local whiskyfestival came to an end. Tasted some great drams and i’ll post the best ones.
This Millburn for example. I love Millburn. Sadly a long closed distillery and therefore becoming very expensive. And i love Samaroli too, mainly the old ones. Great quality and also very expensive. Combine the two: very rare and priced as liquid gold...
So when you have a chance to have a taste, you don’t think twice. An 11 yo from 1970.
As expected: superb. A very happy moment.

Thanks Mr.Y for the great evening. #AttireHouseCigarRoom #JuanLopez #Samaroli
The 22nd day of the Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar brings back Italian bottler Samaroli, which is a sure sign that this one will be elegant and weird.
In this case, we’re looking at a very simple blended Scotch: a combination of a cask of Tormore and a cask from Alt A Bhainne. These are definitely lesser-known distilleries, but fortunately they grazed my palate in last year’s version of the SWAC; Tormore was featured in a Samaroli Spey blend, paired with a cask of Miltonduff (spoiler alert: a single cask of Tormore is also coming up tomorrow!), and Alt A Bhainne in a 7 year-old single cask. The latter was not to my liking, very floral and Glenrothes-ian. So...starting on the back foot there, Samaroli.
Casks #20263 and #187860 have been aged for 21 glorious years before being smashed together. This marriage comes out at 45% ABV.
Call it their defining characteristic, I guess, but the nose on this is extremely delicate. There is a lot of grass and barley with a floral undertone, vanilla, and a touch of sea salt. Green melon also provides a little bit of fruitiness as well. On the tongue it is complex, with a delightfully creamy texture. It is very sweet, with a hint of chocolate and a good amount of vanilla. The fruit comes hard to the hoop as well though, with some citrus and apple, maybe pear. The spice rounds things out, bringing cinnamon and nutmeg and clove, along with a mineral note. Heading into the finish you’re greeted with grass and something floral, transitioning into spice, bitter and peppery to the last.
Considering my experience with Alt A Bhainne, this was a surprisingly complex and pretty okay blend. Definitely on the more aggressive tip of my Samaroli experiences.
