#rules of fandom

I remember a day when ships weren't forced on to the actors. It was like frowned upon they don't need to hear harassed about "why Character A and Character B" aren't together. He may be smiling now but give it a season or two and he won't be.

The list is really long because I started writing them, so expect a reblog of it. So if you like it, reblog it, and it's official.

The first fandom you enter is always your first, no exceptions. There's no such thing as "first fandom maybe" there's a first. So if you're first fandom is Sonic, then you're a sonic fan.

There's no such thing as original, implying that your work is an original work, either be a trend or edit, is false. Somewhere in fandom there's an underrated artist who has done your trend before you, does that mean they are original? No. Creativity is the best gift.

Joining a fandom gives you an experience that is only triumphed by becoming a furry. Once you join a fandom you have a family. Do not fuck it up.

Fandom is not a cult, it's an experience, a lifestyle and even a journey.

If someone you dislike joins a fandom, you are now required to enter a standoff that lasts approximately until one of you relents.

In fandom, there's times where people won't understand, that's okay. That means you have the upper hand.

No ship is canon unless proven by the author, if you want a ship to be canon you make it into fanon.

There's gonna be a time where you run into someone who hates what you do, that someone is called an Anti-Shipper. They hate any and all things disgusting. The best you can do is scroll, block and move on.

Respect your fandom elders, that means the ones that been in fandom since Proshipper meant let and live ship. 9a. The best way to tell if one is a Fandom Elder is if they say… "Back in my days, there wasn't all this pro harassment" or "Back in my days, proshipping meant let ship and live ship." most of these fandom veterans know more about fandom then you do, so respect them.

If you are loud and vocal about hating a topic, we have the right to call you out for your hypocrisy.

Going after someone for liking fictional media even though they have not done anything wrong (that we know of) is considered harassment.

Going after a victim of abuse for writing about abuse in a dark way is harassment.

Requesting a personal army to go after a victim of abuse for writing abuse and liking fictional media even though they have not done anything wrong is considered harassment.

You have personal boundaries, lay down the block button. But don't be surprised when they flock to your profile.

Keep up with your DNI and BYF.

Respect all Selfshippers/Yumeshippers. They are apart of fandoms too.

If there a ship, there is fanfiction of it.

If it is obsecure there is a fanfiction of it.

If the fandom is dead, there is one person alive to maintain it.

It is OKAY to dislike canon.

It is OKAY to have your own headcanon.

it's NOT OKAY to demand that your headcanon become canon.

Fandom is often transformative; and on Tumblr, that's the prevailing type of fandom vs. the more curated type. That's fine. Transformative fandom often iterates on the original work, sometimes heavily.

And while we may get attached to those iterations, remember that those iterations -- popular or not -- are still not canon. Unless you created the story, it belongs to someone else*. The creator gets ultimately gets the final say about what happens in that story.

Yes, whether you like it or not.

Hoping that XYZ will happen in the canon work is part of the fun of being a fan; demanding that XYZ happen in canon and/or being disappointed that it doesn't happen is entitled and selfish.

1) Do not judge the fandom by the fan.

I don’t know if you all know this, but coming into my notifications with “Poor Cas, Dean’s so mean, blabbity blah” when I’ve made a post that has zero to do with Cas is rude as fuck and super annoying.

I’m not hopping into your fucking notifications and talking shit about Cas.
