Flashback Friday to the Canadian Masters Rowing Championships on August 17 and 18, 1996. After rowing on the Long Beach Junior Crew Team for only 6 months my father John Nunn and I won our first Father/Son race together (one of 8 future masters nationals races that we would win over the next 20 years). We were the first father/son duo to both win at the IRA national championships in 1998 when I won with an undefeated freshman season at Cal Berkeley and my father with his alumni boat at Cornell University. Continuing my series of famous people that rowed. Who can forget Eldred Gregory Peck (April 5, 1916 – June 12, 2003). He was an American actor. He was one of the most popular film stars from the 1940s to the 1960s. Peck received five Academy Award for Best Actor nominations, and won once – for his performance as Atticus Finch in the 1962 drama film To Kill a Mockingbird. Peck credits his years at Berkeley for creating an important foundation for his future. "It was a very special experience for me and three of the greatest years of my life. It woke me up and made me a human being," said Peck. I’m going to start a new series on Instagram/Facebook about famous people who have rowed. We will start with the most famous rowing athlete in American rowing history, John and Jack Kelly from Vesper rowing club. My father, John Nunn looked up to Jack Kelley and his rowing dominance throughout his career. My dad wanted to learn as much as he could from Jack when he first started rowing on the national team in the mid 60’s after graduating from Cornell University. John Brendan Kelly Sr. (October 4, 1889 – June 20, 1960), known as Jack Kelly, was one of the most accomplished American competitors in the history of the sport of rowing. He was a triple Olympic Gold Medalist, the first to be so in the sport of rowing. John Sr. was the father of actress Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco (thus maternal grandfather of Albert II, Prince of Monaco), and of John B. Kelly Jr. John Brendan "Jack" Kelly Jr. (May 24, 1927 – March 2, 1985), also known as Kell Kelly, was an accomplished rower, a four-time Olympian, and an Olympic bronze medal winner. In 1947, Kelly was awarded the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States. In 1985, Kelly was elected president of the United States Olympic Committee. Kelly was posthumously inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame as a contributor.
