Simpson: Yes, they’re supposed to trigger empathetic responses. Ideally, somebody looks at it, projects themselves into that same feeling, and then they relate. And because they relate, then they’re projected into that space of reflection. And ideally, that relating and that moment of empathetic response is what heals our planet. Because if you don’t care, you hurt people and hurt each other. And if you do care, if you can relate, then you care more and you hurt less, inflict less violence.

And that goes back to Native women disappearing. She is not an exotic piece of meat; she is a person. And the more you can see and relate to their lives and their experience and their struggles and perspective, the less you’re capable of hurting and objectifying anybody.
