the ducks, always the ducks
sometimes squirrels
or pigeons
or gulls
sometimes swans
so graceful
with gentle beaks
with black feet
with mystical eyes
but the ducks
that's what i remember most
at lakes and ponds
at roadside stops
quacking and waddling
shaking their tail-feathers
always looking for a meal

“Two hundred years from now the numbers and kinds of species we observed here in the latter years of the 20th century may seem as unbelievable to future generations as the presence of passenger pigeons, cougars, wolves, and bison in Pennsylvania two hundred years ago seem to us.” — Marcia Bonta.
Still true in the 21st century. What we take for granted now may well be gone tomorrow. I’ve seen it happen. Document what you see!
I post this every year, but it never stops being relevant.

Chicory Along the Road
Traveling stretched the longest day, my road had grown drab and gray. Then I saw a figure with a coat blue, colored the deepest brightest hue. What did the loyal soldier have to guard? It was a ragged field, not a manicured yard. Such is the way of an old chicory weed. It grows where it can, ready for man's need. Maybe to add to coffee ala New Orleans, or give a weary traveler a beautiful scene. D W Eldred
