4. what is the purpose of that warehouse? what are they making? because like...weird 3d printing gun? weird robot dogs? thats the real x file I think.

let me count the ways!!! I think it’s a missed opportunity to write a mostly silent X-Files episode (an incredible concept) only to keep Mulder and Scully – who are so good at unspoken communication – apart and alone for so much of it. and then in the first scene they’re only not talking because they’re looking at their phones so much, even though the rest of the revival played up how old school they are (which I think sometimes went too extreme in the other direction; Mulder would love having a phone at his fingertips, but I also don’t think they’d sit around on a date with each other and read the news online. you can’t just decide to code them as addicted to their phones for one episode for the sake of commentary). it was out of character for Scully, who went on the run from the FBI, to live in that smart house. and it’s bleak as shit! thematically!! “we have to be better teachers” to the robots? dark. and not in a way that makes it an interestingly cynical thematic counterpoint to a show that’s generally rooted in humanism and hope. rm9 completely replaces both the syndicate (corruption on txf is human, not alien) and the unknown (the show’s analog for faith) with technology, and it doesn’t seem to realize how hollow that is. the last scene is pitch perfect and SO warm, and I think the rest of the episode could have worked better if it were more obviously a fable, like how pmp is in black and white to set it apart. but as is it doesn’t work for me.
