OK so! After some discussion with @istillliveinnarnia I have come up with something. Lest talk about Riptide. The sword/pen is almost a character. And it. Is. AWESOME. - It stays with its owner (Percy) no matter where he goes. - It's a ballpoint pen! That transforms into a bronze sword! - It can also transform into a usable pen Can we talk about the useable pen aspect? It takes Percy 10 books to find out that it can actually be used as a pen. And even then it's Annabeth that actually figures it out. Can you imagine? He walks around with that thing for 5 years and it never entered his head to try and use it as a pen. "Hey I got this cool pen that turns into a Sword!" "Co have you tried to write with it?" "Nope." And then Annabeth comes along "Here gimme this" *click clack* *sword turns into pen* And I'm sitting on the sidelines focusing on "Oooooooh it writes in BRONZE!" Speaking of which, there is ink in that thing! And it reminds one (and by one I mean me) of ichor (Greek god blood). But BRONZE! What is it made of? Some weird monster? The combined blood of all of the monsters felled by this mighty blade? I'm leaning towards the second one.
