Chapter One: Worth your weight in sand
A ruthless king, born from a pit of violence, blood and death. A crown earned through slaughtering anything and anyone in his way, darkness coiled around his very being like thorny vines, prepared to shred and destroy.
Very few had even seen the king outside of the battlefield, fewer still are allowed to work in his castle. The unfortunate souls that were sent as servants, cooks, and even specialty crafters were never seen again, no sign of a body, not a single hair or indication they even existed besides the memories their loved ones tucked away.
The townsfolk knew their king was more of a god than a man, he ruled with an iron fist and tolerated nothing out of line. His rules and decrees were hard-fast, no room for error, streets were kept impeccably clean, families received stipends, farmers always supplied the exact amount of grains and not a single villager dared to try and scrape a little extra for themselves, the punishments too severe to outweigh the risks.
Or so they thought.
An innocent girl, soft and delicate, just barely escaping the wrath of her fathers rage and her mothers neglect. A lamb sent to the gallows the day her parents schemed to sully the purity of their grains by skimming two pounds for themselves and replacing the lacking weight with sand at the bottom.
Unknown to the family, each resident of the village received specific bags in order to track these types of aggressions against the king and community. It was quickly traced back to them and when they were unable to pay the hefty fine, something else of equal value would be chosen in liu of coins.
The guards stand tall and stiff, albeit slightly bored with their tasked duty of accompanying Victor to the home of the transgressors. Watching as the two adults beg for forgiveness. Andy’s attention is on the girl hiding in the corner, the only signal of her existence being the light shaking of the basket she’s tucked herself behind and the soft beige of her skirt peeking out from the edge.
“If you are unable to pay the fine then you will have to forfeit something of equal or higher value. If you have no possessions of value then under decree of the king we will seize all assets, including your home.” Victor isn’t willing to negotiate, his voice is firm enough to make them cower “We’re lowly peasants m’lord, we barely have enough to get by! You cannot take our home as well!” Juiz clocks the crocodile tears on the woman instantly “So you would not be opposed to my guards searching your home to ensure what you say is fact? Our good king would want to know if his people suffered shortages when he has put such effort into laws that keep you all fed.” Victor’s eyes are piercing and they glance at each other, panic clear on their faces “N-no m’lord, please feel free to look around.” the father finally says, his throat bobbing as he swallows harshly, eyes flickering around the room.
The two guards aren’t gentle as they begin to uproot the home, cabinets swinging open, drawers tugged out of their nooks, clay jars shattered on the floor. When they finish they’re surrounded by hoards of spilled grains, dried beans, vegetables and many other foods, more than the family should have.
“Indeed, it is obvious you are lacking in something. Perhaps loyalty? Or is it brain cells you lack?” Andy calls over his shoulder at the parents who had fallen to the ground in shock “Nay! It wasn’t our fault! We have never seen these goods before!” the mother nods aggressively, agreeing with her husband “Truly! It must have been our vile wench of a daughter!” this piques Victor's intrigue, he knew without a doubt that these two were responsible, they had been doing this for a while now but after they put lives at risk by adding sand to their grain bags the king had sent him to deal with it. Victor also knew of a child living here, though the secret messenger reported that she was under fed and rarely allowed to leave the house. Another infraction against the royal decrees.
“Is that so?” his eyebrow raises, Andy had subtly shared the girls hiding spot with him as they searched, leaving her untouched until now “Then she will be taken to the court as payment.” a sharp inhale cracks from behind the basket, but the parents only look relieved “Since your child will be gone, I’ll update your register to show that you will only need half rations from now on.” the relief is quickly wiped away and they begin to argue, begging for him to rethink, but he only glares at them, silencing their jabbering immediately.
Victor waves towards the basket “Juiz, take care of the girl. Do not harm her, just bring her to the carriage. Andy look for anything that might belong to her and pack it for us.” they bow and he heads back to the carriage, nodding at the horseman as he climbs in. His coat is covered in a thin layer of dust and he begins patting it off, soft puffs erupting in the air.
The second you hear heavy boots turn in your direction you bolt, hiking up your skirts and darting out the open door. Behind you a hearty laugh rings out before the man thunders after you, almost as if he was delighted to chase you. Briefly catching the irritated gaze of the dark haired man in the carriage as you run past, your legs pumping faster than you had ever attempted.
Mud from the previous night's rainfall splatters across your legs and dress, leaving grimy streaks as it drips and bleeds through the fabric. The man doesn’t seem to struggle at all, practically flying across the ground. You’re sure he could have caught you by now, his legs much longer and more muscular than your own, but it seemed as though he wanted to see how far you could go.
“Andy! Don’t dawdle!” The woman hollers from behind the two of you and that finally spurs him forward, easily catching you around the waist and hauling you up, you thrash, even trying to bite him but he holds steady, laughing the whole way back where the woman watches stonily.
“Look at the poor girl, she’s filthy.” the woman tuts loudly as she surveys you “Instead of teasing her you should have restrained her before she ruined her clothing.” he shrugs “She’s a feisty lass, I was amused.” she rolls her eyes, ushering him to place your dirty body in the carriage “While you were playing tag I managed to find a few of her belongings, not much there though.” something about the way she says that makes your cheeks warm in embarrassment and shame.
As Andy manhandles you into an empty seat, the dark haired man sighs and tsks, looking you up and down “Juiz, send Sparx ahead to inform the maids they’ll need to prepare a bath before she can see the king.” she nods and brings her fingers up to her lips to let out an ear piercing whistle, only a moment later a blond boy appears next to the carriage “Reporting for duty ma’am!” he gives her a mock salute “Run ahead and ask for a bath to be drawn for our new guest please.” he dashes off the second she finishes speaking, already halfway down the road by the time you’re able to process his speed.
Andy sits next the the dark haired man while the woman, Juiz, sits next to you. You scoot as far away as possible, pressing your trembling body against the opposite side. Eyes flickering between the two men as your eyebrows furrow in confusion. A flicker of mirth sparkles in the dark haired man’s eyes as he watches you try to assess them.
“We are twins, little lady.” you jerk your gaze away as he answered your unspoken question, instead choosing to glare at the curtain as the cart sways back and forth with the motion of the horses. You had never been in a carriage, let alone this far away from home, so your curiosity soon overrides your anger, leading you to lean closer to the window, trying to sneakily open the fabric blocking your view.
A hand reaches past your face and tugs the curtain to the side, you snap your teeth at the hand on instinct but you only earn the now familiar laughter from Andy. You scowl at him, despite your size and lack of food, you still had fight in you and you were determined to make sure they knew it.
But once again your rage subsides, making way for a childlike awe as you watch rolling green hills dotted with soft pastels of flowers glide past you. All three of them watch you as you crane your neck left and right, trying to take in as many sights as you can.
Something inside Victor softens, the look on your face showing your innocence and eagerness to consume this new experience. Andy nudges his side earning his ire as usual “She didn’t do it did she?” they bow their heads together to whisper without you hearing “Of course not,” Andy glances at you as you move forward, sticking your head out the window “her parents had been watched for some time now, but we didn’t have steadfast proof of their wrongdoings until the sand incident. It’s clear that more was left unseen but she will be safe away from them now.” Victor clears his throat, not willing to admit that he was rather hopeful of this young girl.
The ride was long, though it passed too quickly for you. Before you knew it the carriage had already pulled up the long gravel road and parked in front of the castle. The nerves and fear that you had forgotten in the haze of seeing so many things now returns in full force, drenching you in a cold sweat.
Victor catches the way your face shifts, tilting his head towards Juiz to signal her, which was warranted because the second the coach opens the door you fling your body across the seat and outside. Before you can even take one step away, Juiz is already slinging you over her shoulder and carrying you up the stairs. You pound on her back and thrash wildly, just as you had with Andy, but yet again you’re unfortunately trapped in an equally strong grip.
A few maids already wait for you at the entrance and watch with wide eyes as you struggle to get free, hollering at the top of your lung “If you don’t let me go I swear I’ll make you regret laying a finger on me!” you foot manages to connect with Juiz’s ribs and she huffs out a choked wheeze, guilt stills you for a moment but you resume your endeavor “I’ll kick harder next time! Put me down you goliath of a woman!” you manage to wriggle her grip slightly looser and you attempt to push yourself away. Much to your horror, instead of tipping backwards like you planned, your body pitches forward, sliding down her back until you're dangling in the air with her gripping one of your ankles like she had caught a rabbit in a hunt.
Equally horrific, your skirts flip upside down, completely drowning your face and upper body in petticoats and fabrics, baring your bloomers and dirt-caked legs to the maids and your kidnappers. There’s a beat of devastating silence before Andy gaffaws, clapping his hands over his mouth to muffle his amusement.
Juiz lowers you to the floor and the maids rush forward to shuffle your dress into place. Victor had turned completely around, facing the door away from you to give you a bit of privacy while Andy is bent over his knees, shaking as he tries to contain himself.
Tears of humiliation prick at your eyes as the maids fuss over you, cooing at you like you’re nothing but a petulant child rather than a grown woman that had been brutally ripped away from her home and taken to a terrifying king’s castle where you were sure you’d be executed for your parents crimes. The rumors that floated around about the king’s cutthroat attitude and skills with a sword were enough to strike fear into anyone.
The maids tugs you upright and usher you up another flight of stairs, leaving behind your captors and herding you like sheepdogs until you reach a large bathroom. Soft floral scents hover in the air, a large ornate tub in the center with enough oils, perfumes, scrubs and soaps to stock an entire store, on every flat surface. They make quick work of your dress and undergarments, leaving you bare in less than a blink of an eye, and just as quickly have you dunked in the warm, bubbly water. You want to fight, you want to escape and save yourself but the maids' deft hands work the knots out of your shoulders, each of them scrubbing away years of dirt from your hair and washing your body. You find yourself relaxing, your lids dropping to half mast as they pamper you.
A cold bucket of water and an old rag was the most you had gotten for your whole life, a tiny wooden shed behind the house where you could wash yourself was only usable for a few months of the year as the colder weather made bathing unbearable.
But this was entirely blissful. The water felt like silk beneath your fingertips as you swirl your hands around, the soaps and oils combining to create an almost rainbow effect on the surface of the water. In this moment you allowed yourself to pretend like you were a princess, instead of a sacrifice.
I'd really like to continue this story but the Undead Unluck fandom seems really small so I'm not sure if I'll post the rest of the chapters. It just depends on the engagement so I'm not wasting time on content if people don't really care about it lol. - Ketchup
