Neonatal desaturations: the bottom lines
Desaturations in neonates are NEVER “physiologic” (even in preemies!), but etiologies CAN be [relatively] benign (ex/increased vagal tone in preemies such that they desat with handling, crying, increased intraabdominal pressure, etc.)
Desats have a broad differential, including sepsis and neurologic dysfunction; remember, desats do NOT always = respiratory!
It is ++ important to characterize the desats by timing, duration, etc. to help develop your DDx and further evaluate!
