hey this is actually not for me but for my brother. for a few years now weve thought he has some variation of adhd/add maybe autism. honestly im dont really have a lot of knowledge about this stuff. My other brother whos younger and has overheard some of our parents conversations is starting to tease him about having adhd etc. I just wanna know if you have any tips for me? how can i help my brother and my family with this??
Forst thank you for your patience, i know this has beennhere for a bit. It has been super busy at work and i just didn't have the spoons.
So: first, thanknyou for being an awesome sibling. That alone will be such a huge help to your brother knowing that he has an ally on his side. It really depends on how opd your brother is and what exactly is being said.
The first thing I would do is educate yourself (and him) on skills to use, does he need somethimg to fisget with, does he need help keeping track of things etc. Where does he need help and work with him to figure a system that is helpful to him. ( also i do not know how old you are so this might be too much of a burden on you)
Talk woth your brother about how he is feeling. Hse I messages and come from a place where you aren't judging. So often adhd/differently abled kids just need a space to say " this happened and I'm really upset. Or i totaly messed this up". Hold him accountable but also help him find solutions to fix it for next time ( there will be a next time)
In terma of your parents. I am not sure what you are looking for in terms of advice. You can educate yourself on adhd/asd stats. " did you lnow actually, that adhd is extremely genetic" quick one liners to show that you don't find it funny.
You can aslo ask them more questions, what do you mean by that ? I don't understand the joke, something that will get them to talk more about it. Usually, people get uncomfortable in those situation.
You can always flat out say " i don't appreciate the way you joke about my brother" " it is really cruel the way you mock x on something he has no control over, thr least you can dobis be a parent and help him cope".
" it feels really shitty when you joke aboit x, you taught us to not speak about others in that way,
" it is really hurtful to hear those jokes and i don't find them funnny, i am going to my room".
Now OBVIOUSLY please do not do this if you think you would be unsafe. Some parents and cultures are more lenient in terms of what children can say to parents, others, not so much.
But use the the general idea of thr statement and change it in a way that feels effective to you.
In terms of talkimg to your parents i would google bystander intervention. There are some tips there as well.
Another thing fornyour brother is finding positive role models either through media or books. Percy jackson has adhd there is the show the good doctor with asd. Etc. Even if he doesn't know what he has, he can see people who might act similar to him.
And finally, if you feel unsafe for you orbypur brother or tpu feel like he is truly being treated unfairly talk to your teachers or people at your school. I thank you for wanting to help your brother but it should not be your job to do so.
Does anyone else have helpful suggestions or things that i forgot to add ?
