genre: fluff, softie renjunâwc: 1.7k
Renjun was sitting on the living room floor, legs crossed, face a soft mush of adoration as he held a tiny sock in one hand and watched your daughter try to bite the other one.
"No, sweetheart, socks go on your feet," he said, voice gentle, amused. He reached forward to scoop her up, making exaggerated sound effects as she let out a delighted squeal.
You watched the two of them from the kitchen, heart swelling with so much love it hurt. Renjun had never looked more at peace than when he was with her. The center of both your worlds.
"She tried to eat her sock again, huh?" you called out with a knowing grin.
"She gets it from you," he quipped back, grinning at you over her head.
"Say what now?"
He stood, holding her like a little koala attached to his chest.
"Donât pretend I didnât see you bite her teething ring that one time just to check how tough it was."
You flushed, laughing. "That was for research."
He walked over, kissed your cheek, then leaned her toward you.
"Tell your mommy you get all your weirdness from her."
Your daughter promptly drooled down his shoulder in protest.
"See? She agrees with me," you teased. Renjun just rolled his eyes and chuckled.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
Renjun groaned. âPlease tell me you didnât invite them.â
âI didnât. They just have a sixth sense.â
The moment you opened the door, chaos entered in the form of six grown men carrying bags, boxes, and suspiciously excited grins.
âBABY TIME,â Haechan announced. âWhere is my favorite niece?!â
âWe brought presents,â Jaemin said, holding what looked like a plush avocado wearing a crown.
âI brought baby-safe paint for foot art,â Chenle added.
âI brought snacks,â Jeno said. âMostly for us, but still counts.â
Mark gave you a sheepish grin.
âI brought earplugs for when she starts teething. For you.â
âToo late,â you and Renjun said at the same time.
Soon, your living room looked like a baby boutique exploded.
Jisung had your daughter giggling in his lap, making exaggerated faces while Jaemin tried (and failed) to tie a baby headband on her. Chenle was laying out paint paper for a footprint project while Haechan narrated everything like a sports commentator.
âSheâs lifting her left leg⊠slight wiggle⊠oh! We have a SPIT BUBBLE!!! The crowd goes wild!â
âShe likes the avocado,â Jeno noted, watching her cuddle the plush. âShe has good taste.â
Renjun watched from the couch, sipping coffee now, his arm slung around your shoulder as your daughter squealed in delight, a loving smile playing on his lips from seeing her surrounded by love.
âRemind me to thank them later,â he said softly.
âFor what? Ruining our carpet?â
âFor showing her what family looks like. In all its loud, chaotic, ridiculous forms.â
You smiled. âSheâs going to grow up so loved.â
Behind you, Haechan was putting your daughter on the avocado plush like it was a throne.
âLONG LIVE PRINCESS SQUISH!!!â he declared.
Your daughter burped in response.
You and Renjun both burst out laughing.
Later that night, when the house was finally quiet again and your daughter was finally asleep in her crib (after the fifth bedtime story, which Renjun insists on reading despite being half-asleep himself), you found Renjun out on the balcony. Leaning on the railing with the city lights casting a soft glow on his face.
You slipped your arms around his waist from behind, pressing your cheek between his shoulder blades. He let out a quiet breath and covered your hands with his.
"She didnât want to let go of me tonight," he said quietly. "Clung to my shirt for ten whole minutes."
You smiled against his back. "Of course, she loves her daddy so much."
There was a pause, long enough that you felt his heartbeat under your cheek.
"Can I tell you something?" he asked.
You turned him around gently, nodding.
He looked down, brushing your fingers with his.Â
"When you told me you were pregnant, I was happy. So, so happy. But... I was also scared out of my mind."
You stayed silent, letting him go on.
"Our pregnancy... it wasn't planned. I mean, not that I ever didn't want a child with you. I justâit felt like everything happened so fast. I was worried about my career but it was nothing compared to the worry I had about being a good father... a good husband."
You reached out, brushing your hand against his.
"I kept thinking, what if I'm not enough? Not just financially. I mean... I knew I could provide. But thatâs not what makes a good dad, is it? What if I canât be the kind of father she deserves? What if she grows up and thinks I was never around? Or worse, what if she feels like she canât talk to me?"
You remained silent.
"And what if... what if I was keeping you from your own dreams? You didnât ask for this... and then you found out you were pregnant, and just like that, your world shifted, too. You married meâsomeone whose schedule is a disaster, whose life is scrutinized by millions, who disappears for months at a time... someone who canât even guarantee heâll be there for birthdays or first words..."
He paused, letting out a deep sigh before continuing.Â
âBut you never complained. Even when you were throwing up every morning and I was stuck in Japan promoting⊠even when our daughter wouldnât stop crying and you were the only one here.â
He looked at you, eyes glossy.Â
"I was terrified youâd resent me. That you'd wake up one day and feel like you settled⊠that one day youâd look at me and think, 'I could have had something easierâ.â
Tears pricked your eyes. You reached up, cupping his face.
âRenjunâŠâ
âI kept thinkingâŠwhat if our daughter grows up and hates me? What if I become the kind of father she doesnât want around? Iâm not perfect. Iâve seen what being an idol can take from your personal life. I didnât want to become someone you two had to just⊠tolerate.â
You grab his hand, squeezing it tightly.
âYouâre not someone we tolerate, honey. Youâre our everything.â
He looked away briefly, swallowing thickly.Â
âI know Iâm away a lot,â he says, voice cracking, âand you take care of so much on your own when Iâm not around. You havenât slept more than four hours in a row since she was born, yet you still smile at me when I come home like Iâm the best part of your day. You still ask me if Iâve eaten, how my day was⊠you always make sure I'm okay. I donât even know how you do it.â
âBecause I love you,â you say simply, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
âBecause this life with you and our daughter is everything I ever wanted.â
His eyes fill with tears.
âYouâre incredible. Youâre the reason I feel like I can do this. You carried her, birthed her, and stayed up every night while I was gone. And somehowâŠyou still had love left for me⊠I donât deserve you.â
âYou do,â you whisper.
âYou deserve all the love in the world, Renjun. You never stop trying. Even when youâre tired, even when things are hard, you never give up on us.â
He pulled you in, holding you like he was scared youâd vanish.
"I know being a parent isn't just about diapers, bottles, and sleepless nights. It's about being there every single day, in the big things and the small. And I want to be the kind of father sheâll be proud of. The kind of dad sheâll still call when sheâs forty."
"You are that dad. You already are."
He kissed you, long and slow.
"Thank you for choosing me," he whispered.
"Out of everyone in the world... you chose me. Thank you for wanting to carry our child⊠for starting a life with me."
You hugged him tighter.
"I should be the one thanking you. You loved me when loving me wasnât easy. You picked me when it would have been safer to choose someone in your world, but you didnât care about safe. You just cared about us."
There was a long pause, before he murmured, âCan I⊠ask you something?â
You raised a brow.
âYouâre being really soft tonight, whatâs going on?â
He chuckled, nose scrunching.Â
âIâve been thinking aboutâŠmaybe, one day, having another baby.â
Your eyes widened a bit, and he was quick to continue.
âNot now! I swearânot unless youâre ready⊠I mean, you would be the one carrying the baby, going through everything again. I watched you go through so much with our daughter. The morning sickness, exhaustion, the pain, the changes in your body⊠yet you still found a way to laugh with me. I donât think Iâll ever forget that.â
Renjun paused before pulling you back in a hug and gently stroked your hair.
âI will never pretend to fully understand everything you went through and will go through, but I want you to know that I'm willing to wait. However long it takes. I just want you to know⊠if you ever feel ready, I am. The choice is yours. Always.â
Your eyes welled again. "Thank you for being so thoughtful. For always putting me first⊠and for looking at me like I was beautiful when I felt anything but."
He hugged you tighter. "Because you were and you are, my love. Youâre the strongest, and most beautiful person I know."
You buried your face in his neck.
"Weâll take it one day at a time. But knowing youâre ready? It makes me feel safe."
He pulled you tighter. "Thatâs all I want for you."
Outside, the city buzzed. But inside, you held your whole world in your arms: your daughter fast asleep, and Renjun, whose heart beat in sync with yours. And love held everything else.
