I haven’t read the manga, but picture with me, a Hermitcraft Witch Hat Atelier AU where Ren and Doc are the masters to the Buttercups
-Doc likes to experiment, as he does. Typical Suspicious Doc Behaviors even though he’s not really a bad guy. When they were learning magic, Doc was already pretty isolated and concerning to the higher ups, but Ren was able to get through to him and be his friend like nobody else. Therefor, the knight moralis actually started targeting Ren to get him to be the watchful eye to Doc in the inevitable future where he started his own rural atelier. Ren didn’t realize just how much he was being groomed until they were adults, and it actually culminated in a fight between him and Doc. Eventually, Ren had to come to terms with what he had just realized and remains the watchful eye, but without saying anything to the knights. Now, he watches out for his friend and students first and foremost.
-Scar has always been magical. Of course he has, it’s Scar. However in an accident, he and Cub were separated and Scar lost the use of his legs. Idk what happened to Cub yet, probably something vex related, but scars goal is a lot like coco’s in that he needs to get cub back
-Mumbo was born in the great hall and has been friends with grian for a long time. There was one evening where they were caught drawing on themselves, though not magic, and were thoroughly chastised. Poor mumbo had the fear of god put into him about forbidden magic.
-Grian…well. Being grian, that lesson sparked a curiosity that tutors refused to entertain. Grian isn’t sure yet how far he wants to chase this, but he can’t help thinking of all the incredible things magic could do if it weren’t outlawed. He doesn’t think it’s right for humans to be so cut off from magic. Mumbo agrees of course, but grian isn’t quite as sure about the rigid morality of the knights as his friend is.
