Connie starts out by idolizing Reiner, while Reiner, in turn, looks out for Connie (like when he helped Connie and Sasha without hesitation during that cook-off.) Then we get the entire Ragako arc, where Reiner gaslights Connie into thinking he’s crazy for believing the Titan spoke, and even goes so far as to comfort him during his despair. Connie finds out the truth when Reiner outs himself as the Armored Titan. All within a matter of days. (Poor Connie, really.) Yet, even after the betrayal, Connie’s sweet heart still cries for Reiner when he believes Reiner died in Shiganshina.

Let’s not forget Gabi killing Sasha, Connie’s other half, his soulmate. And Gabi? Reiner’s flesh and blood. The angst?? The drama?? (This is literally good angsty post canon shit that we should deep dive into) And here comes another blonde kid (Falco) who looks eerily like Reiner, a child Connie could easily feed to his Titan mother to make everything right again. But he can’t. He just can’t.

We hit the Port fight, where Connie is forced to betray his former Scout comrades. Didn't get a chance to recover, goes straight to save Reiner and Annie while in turmoil. Then comes that quiet, soft moment on the flying boat, and that’s when it hits him: he gets it. Connie understands what Reiner’s been through. He lost his mom, he betrayed and killed his friends, just like Reiner did. (By this point, the warriors already assumed Liberio and their family are gone) Reiner looking at Connie so broken and sad and Reiner comforting Connie, sharing their pain in a way that only they could.
