Queer and Trans Artist of Color: Stories of Some of Our Lives by Nia King
[Goodreads]
A collection of sixteen unique and honest conversations you wonāt read anywhere else⦠Mixed-race queer art activist Nia King left a full-time job in an effort to center her life around making art. Grappling with questions of purpose, survival, and compromise, she started a podcast called We Want the Airwaves in order to pick the brains of fellow queer and trans artists of color about their work, their lives, and āmaking itā - both in terms of success and in terms of survival.
In this collection of interviews, Nia discusses fat burlesque with Magnoliah Black, queer fashion with Kiam Marcelo Junio, interning at Playboy with Janet Mock, dating gay Latino Republicans with Julio Salgado, intellectual hazing with Kortney Ryan Ziegler, gay gentrification with Van Binfa, getting a book deal with Virgie Tovar, the politics of black drag with Micia Mosely, evading deportation with Yosimar Reyes, weird science with Ryka Aoki, gay public sex in Africa with Nick Mwaluko, thin privilege with Fabian Romero, the tyranny of āself-careā with Lovemme Corazon, āselling outā with Miss Persia and Daddie$ Pla$tik, the self-employed art activist hustle with Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarsinha, and much, much more. Welcome to the future of QPOC art activism.
Thoughts:Ā
I went a event called Zine Fest L.A and it was amazing. There was a table with a woman (Nia King) sitting at it with a pile of copies of her book, which I recognized from the internet. I didnāt even know much about it aside from that it was about queer and trans artists so I immediately bought it. Gotta support my queer peeps. I now have read it and it was honestly just amazing, Iām so happy I read it for so many different reasons. There is a wide variety of people telling their very different stories but they also were similar in a lot of ways, and a lot of their views and opinions overlapped in a great way. I think if youāre interested in queer things, art or writing or all three, then this will be a very nice read for you! Iām now going to go on a little bit so if you want to go in knowing nothing then go get it!!
Iām so happy I bought this, you have no idea. Itās just so interesting because Iāve been really interested in writing and art, though Iām not very sure Iām great at either, and these interviews really made me just want to create!!!! It made me want to be super queer and more involved in activism, specifically in creating things for qpoc. Another thing that is interesting is that these interviews took place over a podcast!! And podcasting is something Iāve been seriously considering doing, specifically one thats focus is queer peeps. It wouldnāt be as big as Niaās, and I wouldnāt be aiming to interview artists but Iād like to do something kinda similar. The timing is just a sign, and these have made me want to try and podcast even more. That would be a lot of work so maybe one day!!!
I really enjoyed all of the interviews, Iām really happy there was a lot of trans voices being heard, specifically trans people of color. Those were very interesting. I also really was interested in the latinx queer guys stories, seeing as thats very much my life. Ā I definitely need to check out some of these peoples work, and now I really want to read Janet Mocks book because sheās the only person Iāve heard of before reading this and I know sheās gotten very well known and her story is just really interesting. I just want to read a lot more queer and queer poc memoirs now haha.
Some of the things that really stuck with me were the parts about writing/publishing, about communal care and also there was a specific line I really loved. āA lot of the things that I do are half for myself because I need to do it, and half for other people because I feel thereās a need for it out there.ā And it was so important to me because thats literally how I feel a lot of the time. I blog online on tumblr and make some youtube videos about queer things, specifically novels with queer main characters, and I donāt get paid or anything. I do it because I need to do it and because there arenāt A LOT of people who do it and bring it to others attentions. So, this just was really impactful to me.

Harry shuffles further into the room, timidly taking a seat on one of the chairs set in front of Louisā table. He keeps his eyes on the floor, fumbling for words. āSorry, Iām justāitās just that Iām a bit nervous. And, uh, I wasnāt really expecting for you to look soāā he cuts himself off, just in time to keep himself from sayingĀ beautiful.
āYoung?ā Louis guesses, and Harry just nods, going along with it. āYeah, donāt worry. I get that a lot, mate. People donāt really expect you to be head writer at twenty-nine. They think to get the job you have to be in your forties, or something.ā
So a five-year age gap. Cool.
Ā (harry is a potential new writer for a comedy show. louis is his kind-of boss. they flirt. stuff happens.)
