On your "why it's not good to breed pet store bettas" what did you mean by breeding two tail types together isn't good? I'm very interested in learning more about this.
mostly there is no market for them. for example - the combtail. it’s a mix of a crowntail and a solid finned betta like a halfmoon and it just looks ragged. they are exceptionally difficult to get rid of once you’ve bred them.
there’s also dumbo betta that when bred with a normal betta the fry will mostly come out with deformities in their pectoral fins that in extreme cases make it impossible to swim. they usually have to be euthanized. at the very least they are difficult to sell.
now there are some breeders working on new tail types such as the “crowntail plakat”, and they are catching on some, however these lines take years of selective inbreeding that i’m… really not interested in being part of.
