âSophie! Sophie, wake up!â A voice said. âMom!âÂ
Sophieâs eyes opened, slowly. As she opened, them, two faces were leaning over her, a panicked look on their faces. âWhere-what-wh-wha- what happened?â
âYou fainted,â One said. Calla. The girlâs name was Calla. Like, Calla that died? No, that couldnât be right. She didnât know anyone else named Calla.Â
âOh.â Then she remembered something one of them- Belle- had said when she was still unconcious. Mom. Theyâd called her mom. âDid you call me mom?â
âYes. Well, that is who you are, to us.â
âWhat?â She exclaimed, her eyes widening, and her cheeks flushing red.
âYeah, mom. Although, you donât look much like her. Sheâs got a nice face. All I can see on yours are those dark circles,â Calla told her, bluntly.
âThatâs not very nice.â Sophie looked around the room. âWell, how did you get here, then? Did you lightleap?â
âYeah. Itâs my ability. I guess something about your weird genetics and dadâs super powerful ones merged together, and made this. A time traveler.â
âOh. Who is your father?â Belle and Calla looked at eachother, and then whispered something. Sophie caught bits of it. âInfluenceâ âForkleâ âSilvenyâ âAuntâ âBianaâ âGrandmaâ âEvilâ and âMomâ but they didnât make any sense.Â
âWe donât know if we should tell you or not, after all, it might influence your decision. So, weâve decided, why donât you get all the crew over here, and weâll go from there,â Calla informed her.Â
âNo, no, just tell me. Please, I have to know.â Something in her gut told her she knew who it was. He was always there for her. He was cute, handsome, even. Thereâd even been moments when- maybe- sheâd thought there was something between them. But she didnât know for sure.Â
âSorry, mom. We canât.â
âPlease?â She felt her mind aching to reach into theirs, read theirs, have them tell who she was going to marry, have these kids with.Â
âNot yet. Later, we promise. Now get all our family over here.â
âAre you all related?âÂ
âWe, mom. But yes, techinically. Iâll tell you who Aunt Biana, Uncle Tam, Aunt Linh end up with if you listen carefully and promise not to tell.âÂ
âWell, Uncle Tam and Aunt Biana. Theyâve got a son. We call him Ken, but his whole name is Kenric Forkle Song.âÂ
âYeah, really. They love eachother so much-â
âNo, no. I mean, Tam came back?â
âIt took a bit. After the war. He was a spy, though. Tried to make everyone think that he was with the Neverseen, except you, mom. You guys talked all the time. Sometimes you joke that if dad wasnât so into you, and you into him, you mightâve fallen for Uncle Tam.â
âI know, right? I canât picture it either. But I guess a war and a lot of late-night talks build a relationship, even a friendly one.â
âMmm. How about Dex?â
âWell... I donât know...â
âNo! No. Just, we already said a lot about Uncle Tam and Aunt Biana. We mightâve changed everything too much already.â
âI wonât tell. I promise. Unless it comes up in our cognate training.â
And so the two girls began to tell her about everything that happened, excluding their father.
But Sophie thought she knew who it was.
