heya. Really enjoying the blog, enough so that you’ve influenced my vocabulary. I’ve started saying “smiles warmly” quite a bit. Also i think in terms of clubs we seem to live in the same city so there are a lot of indie bookstores that have regular in person event schedules on their websites. Feel free to answer this publicly or not
yay, thank you! smiles warmly. i have seen some events in bookstores but tragically my brain is too friiiied for the requisite reading. but maybe i need to get up off the ground

Question about your general character naming policy- are you and lynx aiming to keep the names as close to canon as possible while fitting your own name system, or are some of the similarities more coincidental? Wondered this since a lot of the names stayed the same, and some like Aspencloud or Lizardtail kept one part of their original names despite qualifying for others
There's a few strategims I take with renaming characters, many of them I took from Dullard's sensibilities, some I invented myself. For examples, I'll be using characters from the prequel super editions, since they're not gonna be spoilery.
Sometimes we're lucky enough that a name doesn't need to be changed. Adderfang, Stormtail, Dawnstripe, cats like these. When what's written about them vaguely aligns with their suffix, I just roll with it. For cats with as little presence as say, Appledawn or Newtspeck, I go, "yeah, sure, I'll take your word for it," and that can provide a jumping-off point for a personality.
Occasionally a name won't need to be changed, but the color needs to change. Hollypelt as a name is fine, but I needed a dominant white cat in Thunderclan's gene pool, so now she's fully white instead of fully black. Tawnyspots' infamously stupid name has been remedied, making him a spotted warm brown tabby, perfect to be Speckletail's dad.
Often a cat will need their name tweaked slightly to the left or right. Woolly- isn't a valid prefix in QH, but he can still go for Sheep-, which is close enough in essence of the prefix, so Woollytail becomes Sheeptail. Feather- is too vague for a color, so Featherstorm became Eaglestorm (in keeping with the bird theme). Stonetooth and Cloudrunner have invalid suffixes, but they're close enough to -fang and -foot respectively that it's easy to change.
Rarely a cat does have a glimmer of a personality or traits, and that can guide the direction of a new suffix. I noticed in the assessment of the MistHare litter from Tallstar's Revenge, Ryestalk was noted to be quite the tracker, so she became Ryenose (and got an appearance change to fit her color).
Oftentimes a cat's name needs to be completely overhauled, and this is when we can get crafty. Echomist is Hailstar's mate, and she's noted to be especially motherly, even caring for Crookedkit when Rainflower isn't looking. Her suffix can easily be made into her prefix, and her hint of a personality can inform her suffix, creating Mistflower.
Scorchwind I had initially renamed to Burnetdusk, but after rereading Yellowfang's Secret I realized the name Firestorm would've befitted him more (and I'm lowkey kicking myself for that oversight). It fits his appearance, he's incredibly temperamental, and Burnetdusk was chosen because "burn" pun and I wanted to slip a rare-ish suffix in Shadowclan.
Tallstar's mother Palebird is utterly bizarre to me when she's a bicolor like he is. I kept the bird element with the prefix Swallow-, but nothing particularly stood out to me about her, so -pelt she became.
Dawnbright's rename is pretty funny. I just swapped them and suddenly it was legal. Brightdawn.
Back in the original Redux, Moonflower's rename was Silverface, but her beta name Duskflower would have been sufficient for me. Except that Dullard would've preferred to refrain from having all the PSE protags' mothers' names contain -flower.
Sometimes we can keep a name, but the cat's appearance needs to change a little. I mentioned Ryestalk a while ago, and the same thing happened with Ottersplash. -splash is close enough to -stream, so all she needed was to change to brown and behold, Otterstream. Brackenwing also had a highly maternal streak and with the need of a matriarch for that era, she became Brackenflower, a pale brown tabby, rather than a ginger tabby.
And lastly, very very rarely, a name needs to change because it stepped on another cat's name. Onewhisker became Wrenwhisker, so his mother Wrenflight had to become Quailflight. Goose and Moon's dad is named Rooktail, but that's our rename for Talltail, so I picked another corvid and thus, Jackdawtail.
I wasn't able to show any examples for another strategy I employed with my favorite rename, but unfortunately, she's a character for a potential A4 or A5. I managed to keep the same mouthfeel and contour of the name and I'm so peeved I can't tell you guys about it.
Anyways, that's just a few options you can do! Happy renaming!
Just wondering- is there ever shame or disappointment for a new warrior getting an appearance-based name as opposed to a talent-or personality-based name? I feel like i’d be disappointed but obviously the clan culture is a bit different

So what i’ve gathered from your liveblog is that dangerous crow boy’s author should be writing yaoi but is too embroiled in heterosexuality to do so
I was not exaggerating guys, the dynamic and history between River and Cielo was so visceral and poignant to a degree that was truly ridiculous.
Cielo doesn't show up physically until about 3/4th of the way in but he has been there since page fucking one. They've been inseparable since childhood, and when Cielo falls in love with a human River is terrified he'll be left alone and is constantly poking and prodding. Little does he know this girl he's jealous of needs help and rescuing, and Cielo tries to subtly ask him for help but River doesn't pick up on it and pushes him away instead. Cielo goes missing for a decade and River's wallowing about being abandoned only for Cielo to show up on his doorstep on the verge of death, and River immediately drops everything to nurse him back to health and desperately try and draw him out of where he's mentally retreated to, swearing vengeance on whoever did this to him (the girl Cielo'd fallen for).
Later, in Cielo's quest against his former love, he absolutely shreds River's wings and his ability to fly. For this River swears vengeance against him--and grudges are strong in crows. Until he stumbles upon Cielo's trove, his sacred collection of personal items, and understands the depth of Cielo's pain and madness and how badly he failed to save him. He's genuinely brought to his knees by this.
Then Cielo shows up again, five years after they've last spoken. They start physically fighting until River breaks down, asking why, because i would've followed you anywhere. And Cielo says, it was an accident. River apologizes, can't take this revelation and they start fighting again--to the point River has his hands on Cielo's throat in a mirror to how Cielo held his own lover right before she died that is explicitly made by canon. And Cielo's not fighting him. Blake interrupts them, and River breaks again. He apologizes, which indebts him to Cielo by fae rules.
River realizes here his wings have been restored, and in a swirl of emotion from his fight/partial reconciliation/fixed wings, kisses Cielo on the lips and says "I love you, bro." He swears his aid to Cielo's mission of vengeance, and they're tentatively alright until Cielo kidnaps Blake, but that's a whole other thing.
River and Blake? Crows like to collect odd bits and bobs, and Blake was a diy upcycler who likes oddities and fixing things up. Also Blake pushes and fights back and will tell River off when he's an ass, and he thinks that's incredibly hot. They're also mates. They've known each other a week. I cannot emphasize enough that's the extent of their relationship. I'm not trying to downplay it it's just truly that barren it's RIDICULOUS
