Let's have a good laugh about how goofy it is to name yourself Lord Ruler.
May as well have named himself Bossy McBosspants.
Rashek had ZERO creativity
He could have named himself something at least a little bit cooler. (10 minutes, no caffeine, no sleep; Overking, Worldshaper, The Omnipotent, Pankrator, Prime Totality, The Sempernal Master, Eonlord the Infinite, Sovereign Ascendent.) This shit is easy.
He's Moon Moon.
Not, Fuhrer Dictator.
Rashek:So you and Ruin were a couple.
Preservation:Yes.
Rashek:You have terrible taste in men.
Preservation:(looking at Rashek adoringly)Yes.
My friend is reading Mistborn for the first time because I suggested it, so I finally felt like doodling some character portraits for her!

Sadeas is Worse than The Lord Ruler (or at least he could be)
So, hot take on the Cosmere villains poll but I think Sadeas could be worse than the Lord Ruler and just happened not to have a Shard. The Lord Ruler did create a caste system and subjugated the majority of the human race on his planet for a millennium. He's not a good guy - him stopping Ruin for that period is literally the only good he did for a thousand years of rule.
But don't tell me that Sadeas wouldn't have done worse with the same amount of power - he fully buys into the Alethi idea of war as the ultimate virtue. He's bored by the petty squabbling of the lighteyes not because it's petty but because he doesn't think it lives up that ideal of war. So don't tell me if he got the right shard (maybe Odium or Ruin) he wouldn't have plunged the world into a never-edning war with him as one of the generals.
I think the Lord Ruler is such an interesting character because we see him as this tyrant. An indescribable evil, we see him oppress the skaa, we see him ruthlessly execute criminals. Evil right? But then *mistborn spoilers*
We find out that he was trying to fight ruin. He spent his entire life knowing that ruin was out there and thinking he was the only one who could make the necessary preparations. And ultimately he was right, it was his food caches and water stores that allowed the empire to survive in the later books. Where he went wrong was he believed that everything would only work if he had absolute control over everything. To me that is reminiscent of Preservation, which makes sense considering he took up the power of preservation temporarily. This belief that if everything is controlled and regulated then nothing can happen that goes against the plan is where he went wrong. He’s such a good character and it’s something you only realize after reading and looking back at his actions
Rashek voice I figured it out! If I can just spike myself once a year until the Well refills, I’ll be able to— *gets stabbed 1023 times*
