"Dragons" • Dragons satisfy your call to roam, Odin gift your children, clear view of heaven, to guide them home, tales of magic and glory, blood and iron salvation, made vikings and warriors, out of farmers and fishermen, their hands ache for blade and shield, but still love plow and scythe, waves temper their hunger, so they can harvest the autumn fields, Thor quench your need, to drum the clouds, throw thunder against the sky, close the gates of Valhalla, so ravenous monsters can slumber, trap the beasts on land, until Idun returns, once seeds are sown, those southern winds begin to blow, they whisper tales of a golden shore, make cold hearts long for the Great hall once more. • • • With a prompt like "vikings and warriors" and "magic" it was so hard not to write about these part time Nordic pirates. The taste of an Apology • Hesitation, take the berry, anticipation, short seconds turn sour, feel it fill the hollows in your chest, laid bare, as you stare, at lavender lilac skies, not sure what honey words, are there to convey, complete sincerity, now over-sweet to mask the bitter truth, for words are a sharp mockery, of actions willingly, taken, wine carried in honeysuckle, acid on the edge of a tongue, when you shouldn't have to, for you did nothing wrong, this is forgiveness and love, this apology, is a kiss on a wound, bandaid the bond, make the pain go away, maybe it works, mistletoe you hung up, drops fruit into the pile, for awhile, everything tastes of nectar, you get to stay. • • PS I am a tangle of emotions, someone explain to me what happens when you say sorry so many times, you don't even know what the words mean anymore, because you made a habit of apologizing to someone whether you were right or wrong. Deep inside you will always feel like you're not enough..when people say you are, you feel the countdown begin, the hand ticking to when they will disappear. It will happen soon. You believe you don't deserve, so everyone lies when they say they forgive you, they love you, the distance between you two just seems to grow, as you put up one stone after another, blocking out everything and everyone..and then you wonder why it's so dark. What happens when you can't say forgive me not even one more time? Because you are so tired of being the one to blame, each time is the last you will say it. "Aretha" You embody the name, your soul has no equal, you wear the crown, no other neck can hold up, this record is a memory, a witness to a legacy, so I can feel the shade of your aura, as you glide onto stage, crowds too captured by a lady, even your handbag and coat, play a part in the performance, you catch each word, effortlessly, spin air into sweet ambrosia, a demure virtuoso, a dancer who does not twirl, time holds its breath, listening alongside me, it sighs now, as you stand in silence, allow the orchestra to play the final glorious note, when you take a bow, I stand with the audience, your voice will never be forgotten, to gather dust in an attic, you were no ordinary honey bee, you remain always, a queen amongst queens. • • PS It been a year since 'we' lost Aretha Franklin, because whether you realize it or not Aretha was more than just the Queen of Soul... a woman who still wore a hat, so much more than a Diva who would still wear and then sometimes would take off her coat (and handbag) on stage (because fact.. she would carry stacks in those purses, as she preffered paying in cash).. you can't put her legacy into words, all you can do is be spellbound by it all. Do your soul a favor today and listen to some Aretha. I suggest her rendition of Nessun Dorma at the Grammys ...Hint: If you don't know what I'm talking about...
