Most surprising thing to non-circus people? Clowns' Role and position. They aren't the idiot of the troupe, and they sure as heck aren't the fool newbie. The average Clown has tried a bit of everything at some point and most likely knows something you don't about It all; What they can't do themself, they either could do in the past or have seen enough times to be able to give anyone Who isn't and Expert a few tips (and maybe they've got something for the experts too, depends).
