Daily Writing Challenge – February 2026 – Day 2 – Hide/Golden
Raena Starfallen opened her eyes, squinting against the morning sun. It was so good to be home, in her own bed, and not in the barracks. The beds there were horrible, it was crowded, and loud, especially now with all of the things happening in Quel’Thalas and with Xal’atath. New people were signing up every day to fight for their country.
The rare opportunity to go home to Shattrath and visit her family was eagerly taken, and Raena made her way to her family estate in Eversong, and then took the portal her mother had installed. Arriving home felt just like it always did; a relief. She loved the city, but she loved Shattrath more, especially her mom’s quiet gardens, the library, and, of course, her bedroom.
Being the eldest daughter of wealthy noble definitely had its benefits. Rae rarely wanted for anything. In fact, she usually just had to ask for something, and it was hers. She tried to not take advantage of that, but her bedroom was the one place she would always splurge, especially her bed. Having a big, soft bed with a lot of fluffy pillows was an indulgence she no longer took for granted.
Still, she worried that this would be her last time home in a long time, if ever. Although she wasn’t finished with her Blood Knight training, she was a Paladin, capable with sword and shield and the Light. If something happened, she knew she would likely see battle. It terrified her, but she wasn’t going to hide from her duty. She owed it to her city, to her people, to her family.
To her parents, who hadn’t made it through one of Azeroth’s last major battles. Losing them in the Cataclysm was part of what had shaped her into the woman that she was today. Although she didn’t remember them, she would fight for their memory, and hope that she made them proud. She knew her mom was proud of her, and so was Dicenne, but she wanted to make their people proud as well.
She wanted to be part of the reason the golden land of Quel’Thalas continued to be a home to her and her people, and she would defend it, with her life if needed.
