Raven lay stretched out in Jasonâs massive bed, watching the late autumn rain tick against the window. If she strained her ears enough, she could hear the muffled sounds of some of his family starting to wake, stumbling down to the kitchen for breakfast. Next to her, Jason stirred, haphazardly searching through the covers for her. His hand slid along the curve of her hip, and he pulled himself closer to her, kissing along her bare shoulders.Â
âGood morning.â
Raven felt a warm shiver of satisfaction slide down her spine and she rolled onto her back, the sound of the rain picking up as it slammed against the window. The torrential storm had just arrived, and it left Raven feeling drowsy and lethargic.Â
Jason laid next to her and kissed along the hollow of her throat.Â
Of course, other things had left her lethargic too. A soft blush crawled up her neck as she listened to Jasonâs soft breathing and felt his fingers skim along her skin. She couldnât believe she had been so bold last night. Raven wasnât shy when it came to trying to understand her sexuality, but she also wasnât the type of person to put it on full blast either. And yet she sat in that hot tub with Jason and watched a porn, and then she masturbated in front of him, and then⊠Well, the rest of the night had been Jason making her realize how little she knew about her own bodyâs desires - and there were apparently a lot of them.Â
He played her like a finely tuned instrument, and he knew all the songs to make her sing. Raven gave a content sigh as he nibbled at a spot just below her ear before teasing it with his tongue. Electricity snapped along her skin and she pressed her legs together, hoping she might stave off her own arousal - it was pointless, but she tried anyway.Â
âWe canât stay in bed all day, Jason.â She wanted to. Gods, she wanted to. Jason was an attentive lover, and one of her best friends. The transition from sparring partners to friends to lovers seemed almost too easy and smooth, like she was following a path she didnât realize was set out for her.Â
âWhy not? Weatherâs gross. We donât have anything pressing to do today. We have an electric fireplace and wifi.âÂ
Damnit. He made a good argument. Raven pushed at her bedhead and sighed. âWeâre going to have to eat sometime.â
He picked up his head and grinned at her, his expression almost playful. âOh, Iâm sure we can find something to eat.â
Her face fell. âMy pussy a meal does not make.âÂ
âMaybe not.â His grin widened. âBut it sure tastes like dessert.âÂ
She pushed at his shoulder, and Jason laughed rolling to the side. He stood up and Raven tried not to feel a little defeated at the sight of him pulling a pair of sweatpants over his thighs. Honestly, that man could bring down countries with the power there. The sight of his muscles as he bent her into a hundred different shapes was enough to make her lose her well-placed control right there. Her eyes trailed up his sculpted abs as he reached for his phone.Â
âItâs gonna rain all day.â He frowned and flicked over to the radar. âAre you sure you donât want to stay in bed all day? Iâll even go grab some books from the library if you want.â
He obviously knew the way into her heart. Raven thought about laying in bed with him reading and drinking tea all day, only interrupted by slow, lazy sex. Her breath hitched and he must have read her expression, because he grinned and rocked back on his heels. It looked as though he knew he was about to win an argument. âIâll bring up breakfast and you can decide after youâve eaten.â
The sound of Titus bounding down the hall, followed by a stumbling, sleepy Damian, made her pause. She shook her head and pulled the covers off, searching for her nonexistent clothes. Not even a pair of underwear. She had been staying in her own room while she was here, and after what happened in the hot tub last night, she didnât think to bring her own clothes to Jasonâs room. Oh gods, she was going to have to wear Jasonâs clothes back to her own room, and that was somehow worse than a normal walk of shame.Â
âWhat is your family going to think? Knowing I slept here.â She chewed on her lower lip, trying not to think about Dickâs snide comments or Stephanieâs low brow jokes. An image of Alfred asking her if they had âbeen safeâ filled her mind and she almost had a panic attack. So much for keeping her relationship with the extended Bat family professional. Groaning, she fell back into bed and pulled the pillow over her face. âI donât think I can face them.â
Jason shrugged and picked his shirt off the floor, pulling it on over his head. âI donât see how it matters? Youâre an adult. Iâm an adult. We like each other.â
She blinked and yanked the pillow off her face, turning to stare at him for a long moment. Swallowing slowly, she felt her heart pick up in her chest, hammering out a frantic beat. âYou like me?â
He paused and looked at her, eyebrows knitting together. âAre you seriously asking me that?â
Raven nodded, refusing to look away from him.Â
âOh my god, Raven.â He dragged a hand down his face and stared at the ceiling, groaning as if he couldnât believe her. âIâm a horny asshole, but Iâm not a slut. I wouldnât sleep with you if I didnât like you. Youâre strong and smart and clever, and you understand my darkness better than any of my family⊠â He paused and looked over at her. âNot to mention youâre freaking beautiful. And you give all my shit back to me. Of course I like you. Iâve liked you for years.âÂ
âWhy didnât you say anything?â
âWhy didnât you say anything?â He shook his head before giving her a tilted smile. âBesides, I thought I made it obvious last night.â
He had been an extremely attentive lover. Ravenâs shoulders fell and she gave him an incredulous look. âYou donât have to preen like a peacock. You know youâre good in bed.â
He laughed, the sound slow and rumbling. His eyes searched hers and he walked around the bed towards her. His hand cupped her cheek and he leaned down to give her a slow, heady kiss that curled her toes. She stumbled forward and pressed her hands against his chest, stealing kiss after kiss until they were both left breathless. Raven didnât want him to get breakfast. She wanted him back in bed, making love to her like the world was going to end. Â
A slow smile broke across his lips. âBreakfast first, little bird. Then weâll see where the day goes.â He gave a gentle tap to her ass, and urged her back in bed, pulling the covers up over her shoulders. âAnd⊠I donât mind if you get started without me. I know you need to tame your powers, or whatever.âÂ
Heat fanned out over her cheeks, and she threw a pillow at him as he ducked out the door. A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth as a chuckle escaped.Â
Jason groaned as he slowly peeled his shirt over his head, his ribs stinging horribly from his activities earlier that night. He gritted his teeth as he pushed through the pain, yanking it over his head and tossing the offending garment to some random spot in his dingy, dark hotel room before removing his pants, the red light from the neon sign outside his window being the only light to guide his way. He hummed as he looked down at himself, noting all his injuries:
A few bumps, a few scratches. Bruised - maybe, broken ribs. Knife wound to the outer thigh. And of course, a headache from all the hits to the head. Perhaps a mild concussion.Â
Fixable. Painful but fixable.Â
Shuffling over to his bed, he sat down with a strained sigh, somehow matching the sound of the bed springs squeaking.Â
âFuck,â he hissed, grabbing the bottle of vodka on his nightstand and bringing it to his lips. Tossing his head back, he took a big swig before pouring some on his thigh, uncaring about the mess it would make on the floor. He grunted from the sting of the alcohol but quickly recovered before opening the drawer filled with different sized bandages and gauze. âShit.â
It hadnât been a good night. It hadnât been a good trip as a whole, in fact. This mark was more difficult than he thought and it pushed him behind schedule.Â
Longer than he had planned.Â
Longer than he wanted.
Longer than he told Raven heâd be.
RavenâŠ
He rolled his tongue in his mouth before reaching for his phone in his back pocket and dialing her number. Jason took another swig as he listened to the phone ring, waiting - praying - that she would answer. He could really use the sound of her voice tonightâŠ
One ring...
Two ringsâŠ
ThreeâŠ
âHello?â
 His heart fluttered at the sound of her voice, a smile sliding on his lips. âLittle BirdâŠâ
He heard her breath hitch, followed by her quickly murmuring something to someone off the phone and sound of hurried movement. A few seconds ticked by. âWhat the hell, Jason?âÂ
âItâs nice to hear your voice too, Little Bird,â Jason teased, wrapping his thigh as a smile rolling at his lips at her false anger, knowing full well she this was how she chose to convey relief.
âDonât âLittle Birdâ me,â she hissed at him, âItâs been weeks since you last called. I thought you were dead.â
âTo most people, I still am.â
âJasonâŠâ
He pressed his lips, to hold back the laugh that threatened to break his throat. âNot in the mood for zombie jokes. Got it. â
âWhere are you?â
Jason sighed as he stared out his window to the city streets beyond. He thought for a moment, wanting to have one person that cared about him to know where he was. Maybe he would feel less lonely if he did. Maybe, she would⊠He let go of the thoughts, hanging his head low with another heavy sigh. âYou know I canât tell you that, Little Bird. You understand?â
He heard her breathe into the speaker. âI know. Figured Iâd try anyway.â
Another smile grew to his lips. âI want to tell youâŠâ
âBut you canât,â she replied. âCause, gods forbid, your brother finds out youâre alive.â
âIâll come out of the coffin when Iâm good and ready, Raven,â he chuckled, feeling the tension ease.Â
âOnly two sentences before you had to make another âI diedâ joke.â
âCounting now, are you?â
âIâm keeping a record. I think the longest youâve ever gone without is ten sentences.â
âThat sounds about right,â he grunted as he moved to lie on his bed, his bones suddenly growing heavy. âHow have you been, Little Bird? Husband still being an ass?â
âUnfortunately,â her voice dropped, in disapproval. âSame usual thoughtless bullshit.â
Jason gasped, dramatically. âLanguage!â
âHush, Kettle,â she shot back, humor coating her voice. âCan you, at least, tell me when youâre coming back?â
âMissing me, Little Bird?â He teased with a light chuckle.Â
âDonât tease.â Her voice cut through like a knife. Calm, even, and serious. âWhen are you coming back?â
His brow furrowed at her tone. âEverything alright, Little Bird?â
A long silence slid between the two of them to the point where he thought that they might have lost connection but then, she exhaled. âItâs not⊠I⊠Itâs been hard here⊠without you.â
His heart tugged and stung at her words. His eyes slid closed, the image of her floating around his head. Her eyes low and her shoulders hunched as the weight of the world pressed on her. Guilt flooded his system at the thought. âIâm doing everything I can to get back to you, my Little Bird.â
âYou promise?â Her voice sounded so meek, it pulled at his heart again.
âI promise, Raven,â he sighed. âI hate being away from you too.â
He heard her gasp on the other side of the phone. âI didnât say that.â
He chuckled as he settled more into his bed, the springs underneath him groaning underneath him with every move. âYou didnât have to, my dear. I know you.â
He could, practically, hear her blush. âThatâs a bold assumption.â
âAre you telling me Iâm wrong?â he smirked.
âI didnât say that either.â
âYouâre not saying much, period.â
âThis, coming from Mr. I-Canât-Tell-You-Where-I-Am.â
âIâm not saying much in regards to work, not how I feel. Difference,â Jason replied.
â... And how do you feel?â
He hummed. âYouâre telling me you donât already know?â
Another pause. âYou miss me.â
Not a question but a statement. Clever Bird. He snorted. âObviously, but itâs deeper than that.â
âHow deep does it go, then?â
âDays are better with you,â Jason started. He wasnât sure if it was the pain in his body or the alcohol or how exhausted he was or just her or a beautiful combination of all of them, but he just had to get all the words that he had been carrying out. âLook, we both know I havenât been much for spending time with people over the past few years but I love spending time with you.â
âItâs not so⊠lonely, you mean?â she asked.
âNot quite...â he hummed. âMore like: I love being alone with you.â
âThatâsâŠâ he heard her drawl.
âA lot,â Jason sighed. âI know.â
âI was going to say that itâs similar to how I feelâŠâ She answered back.Â
His heart fluttered. âYeah?â
âYeah,â she said, her voice light and shy, and he could've drowned in that sound. âIâve been very lonely in my marriage and often Iâve found solace in being alone during my patrols but⊠I donât mind sharing that time with you instead.â
Jason smiled at the words, his desire to be there with her increasing tenfold. He opened his mouth to respond before hearing the distant sound of an alarm going off on the other side of the line. Figures. âSounds like you have to go, Little Bird.â
âI doâŠâ she sighed. âThis conversation isnât over though.â
He chuckled. âIâll save a bit of love for you.â
He heard her breath hitch. âCome home soon?â
âI promise you I wonât be long.â
âYou better not be. Be safe over thereâ
âI will. Have a safe battle, my Little Bird,â he replied back. âIâll be home soon.â
Pressing the end button, he ended the call before holding the phone to his chest. His body was battered and bruised but he couldnât feel any of his injuries at the moment. He could only feel the buzz in his heart and the warmth of her words.Â
He sighed and allowed sleep to, finally, take him, knowing dreams of her lied on the other side.
It was some freak accident, a spell gone wrong meant for his brother in the heat of battle, what it had left was something so inhuman, so dangerous and monstrous that when the wars were done he was locked away in an enchanted prison by his own family out of fear of what he was becoming.
The royal family scoured the lands for a way to undo the curse, but it appeared none would be able to.
In time the royal family slowly gave up on his fate, for they could find no cure, and perhaps there was none to save their beloved brother. Time moved forward as peace settled over their country. Prince Richard married the wise oracle who was called Barbara, their reign was long and prosperous as the crown was passed to their son and their sonâs son. Prince Timothy was a renown scholar, whoâs works became classic literature and classic studies for the educated mind. Prince Damian was a revered general, who had led their nation to greatness, and made their people indomitable.
And in the centuries that passed their names were revered, beloved, and remembered with great love and affection. But slowly time robbed their brotherâs memory from their people, and slowly the grand castle which was the prison for their brotherâs monstrous form fell into disrepair, and the once great Prince wept in sorrow as time moved on and left him trapped an immortal beast, for none would ever be able to break his curse.
Who could ever, truly, love a beast?
~~~*~*~*~~~
Raven Roth looked over her book selection of the measly shop in town, most of them were from the shop ownerâs personal collection too, which was sad. Still, she was pleased to see the works of Ann Radcliffe here, it had been a small treasure she had found in London and was pleased to see it here in this small shop. She smiled as she paid for her book and left the shop. Oh how she longed for America again, but she was here in this European country side because of her ailing grandfather. Luci had been very ill when he had sent word to the States about his health, Raven had come in place of her cousins. Her family ran a small potato farm on Montaukett, her uncleâs family land, and her aunt had despaired knowing that Luci was so unwell in Europe. Raven had come to Europe to take care of her grandfather so her aunt wouldnât worry.
Her grandfather had long since left his ancestral home because of the âEnlightened Absolutismâ and had taken to hiding in a small mountain village in France. Her grandfather had sent both his daughters to the Americas though, where her mother and aunt had survived the Revolution, and now were both getting old and weary, Ravenâs own mother had passed away, devastating her father.
Her father had been a member of the Mohawk Tribe, her mother had found him injured and helped heal him. It had lead to her motherâs marriage to the warrior, and later, it had lead to Ravenâs orphan status before she returned to her motherâs sister in Montaukett. That had lasted a few years before Raven had come to France to care for her grandfather. Luci was a very old, very sick man, otherwise Raven would have insisted on his voyage to America where the family could care for him properly. Especially with all the unrest going on in France, and the Napoleonic Wars, Raven wanted to flee from here as quickly as she could but could not leave her grandfather.
Walking through the town she longed for her home where people did not stare at her for her unusual appearance, people had long since accustomed themselves to her at home. Here though she seemed somewhat of a novelty and she did not like it.
âHello Raven,â a voice called out for her, she grimaced recognizing it. Since her arrival in this town she had been relentlessly hounded by the rich merchant Garfield Logan, an English officer who was stationed in this village because of the Napoleonic wars; another reason she wanted to leave this wretched country. She supposed he could be handsome, though she had yet to see the appeal of a Brit. At all. Her country had just gone through a bloody war kicking them out, and she was not inclined to be courted by one. Still, the manners her aunt had drilled in her had her stopping when Garfield caught her elbow.
âYou mustâve been lost in thought and not heard me!â he chuckled.
âI heard you, but you have not heard me,â she replied tersely as she gingerly pried her elbow from his grasp and glared at him. His blond hair and blue eyes had no doubt endeared him to many but he was a nuisance to her. The way he leered at her also made her very uncomfortable.
âI was wondering if you would do me the honor of saving the first dance for me,â he smiled as he caught her hand, she yanked it from his grasp.
âI will not be attending the gather, I am caring for my grandfather,â she turned and continued for her home when he appeared at her side again.
âRae, itâs unseemly of a girl like you to turn into a spinster,â he started.
âAnd I have no interest in courting a red coat, best be on your way Garfield,â she said dismissively. She was interested in going home. She had told Garfield numerous times ânoâ and yet it always seemed that the blond had not caught her rebuff.
âRaven, you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, we belong together.â
âI am not interested, and I must go,â she stated as she managed to finally escape him and started for her home. The red coat would not learn and it was killing her slowly. Putting on a small smile for her grandfather she walked into his small cottage.
âI have collected a new book for us to read, Grandfather! An Ann Radcliffe novel, I think you will enjoy her,â Raven said as she walked up to her grandfather, he was laying in bed, propped against the pillows watching the village, he turned to her slowly and smiled.
âArella my angel!â
âNo, grandfather, itâs me, Raven,â she said as she took her customary seat.
âOh, yes, sorry my dear, you look so much like your mother!â he chuckled.
She smiled at the mention of the likeness. Her mother had been a stunning woman. âNow, where do we begin?â she chuckled lifting her new prize up.
âThe beginning is best,â Luci sighed dryly.
âI am not so certain of that,â she chuckled. âBut very well, we shall begin at the beginning!â
