You can see, perhaps, how the Radchaai conception of the universe as being God itself might seem the same as the Tanmind idea of the Black. You might also see why it seemed a bit odd, to Radchaai ears, to hear someone who believed gravity wells were the land of the dead call people superstitious for worshiping a lizard.
Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie
Imperial Radch Part 1: Radchaai Linguistics--“she was probably male”
There’s a giant multi-galaxy empire called the Radch. Not aliens. Just humans so far into the future that their culture is radically different from any we know.
Glove-wearing, tea-drinking, and honor-obsessed.
The main character is a military starship AI that can control thousands of human ancillary bodies. It’s a long, complicated plot, but suffice it to say that what was once an AI with thousands of bodies, connected to a human crew, and tasked with military missions and purpose is whittled down to one single ancillary–One Esk Nineteen.
That’s not even one of the most interesting parts.
I keep thinking about sumptuary law and the Radch and I wonder, can anyone think off the top of their head of any specific clothes/colors that are only associated with Anaander? It would definitely make sense, since the Radch is so hierarchical and obviously color and uniform are already used to denote specific occupations. Presumably there is at least one kind of Anaander-only garment or maybe dye lot.
my pronouns are she/her but only in radchaai

One of a triad, that word. Justice, propriety, and benefit. No just act could be improper, no proper act unjust. Justice and propriety, so interwined, themselves led to benefit. The question of just who or what was benefited was a topic for late-night discussions over half-empty bottles of arrack, but ordinarily no Radchaai questioned that justice and propriety would ultimately be beneficial in some gods-approved way.
