The moon is rising, but no one is looking at it. In this painting, Caspar David Friedrich turns every figure away from us. The people watch the sea and the distant ships while an anchor lies unused in the foreground. Instead of showing us their faces, Friedrich invites us to share their view. The quiet evening light is the real subject. That soft glow over the water, somewhere between day and night, gives the scene its calm, reflective mood.
