Over it all rn but atleast I feel cute
Not to subtle….
Ugh. I’m feeling really insecure right now. I’m editing Book 1, which is from age 7-13. It covers things like developing relationships with Philip and Olympias, introduces siblings and the cohort who later become Companions, lays foundational court expectations and tensions, the building of myth, Leonidas, Phoenix, Persian envoys, Bucephalus, religion, training, etc.
Problem is, my dad is of the opinion that nobody is going to read an adult fiction novel about little kids.
I tried writing without the early years, and it fell flat. Relationships and character arcs weren’t earned, foundations were missing, and I discovered that where I was trying to start the story was simply not where the story started. I tried combining it with Mieza, and it dragged Mieza down. The only coherent option is to put it in its own book.
What do I do now? I genuinely can’t imagine starting this story later, but now I’m worried nobody is actually going to want to read it. Would you read an origin like that as the foundation of a larger series, given their ages?
(Internal dialogue: I don’t know why I’m even bothering asking; I don’t think anyone really even cares about this project other than me. I think I probably talk too much about it.)
