One of the good things that came out of quarantine was the opportunity to reacquaint with my own face. I’m a 35 year old female, and I wore makeup on a nearly daily basis. I never painted it on thick, but I did wear blusher, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, and lip stain. More for work, less for everything else, but always something. When Covid-19 quarantine happened, makeup went out the window, alongside things like bras and real pants. At first, my nude face surprised me. Oh god, I’d think, every time I happened to catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. Yikes. But after a while, it became normal. It was just my face. I’ve spent hours outside nearly every day now. Running, gardening, foraging the woods. And even though I slather myself with sunscreen, my face is now caramel-y tan, and a little rosy. There are freckles on my cheeks, and my nose is brown. I like it. My unadorned face has normalized. It makes me think though, about the implications of makeup. What is so wrong with a person’s face, that it’s a habitual act to paint on features that aren’t there, or remove features that are. How many times a person not worn makeup, and has appeared sickly to those familiar with them? And what a profound thing that says about our faces! I remember being little, and putting on makeup for occasions, like a costume. I’d look into the mirror, and a stranger’s face would be staring back at me. The older I got, the more makeup became a part of my daily routine, until that stranger’s face became my face, and my face became strange. Now, I’m not saying that I’m going to be bare faced forever. Sometimes, makeup is fun. It’s artistic, creative, and anything that boosts my crappy self esteem is a pretty good thing. And some days, makeup is necessary. I’m looking at you, crater zit on the right side of my forehead. But I am so very grateful to reclaim my face. To become familiar with it again. To be able to face the world looking through my own short, dark eyelashes and unlined lids. This is what I look like, and it’s not weird, or bad, or ugly. It’s just me.
(Also, I used to blow through disposable contact lenses, and I thought it was just my body over-producing protein deposits, but no. It was the eyeshadow, 100%. )

. 1. Plan and schedule 💻 📔 . In this difficult times it’s really easy to fall behind and get anxious because of the drastic changes you could be facing in your daily life. By planning your week, you won’t fall behind of work, study or even self-care.
2. Reinvent your organization systems 📁. Sometimes, it’s really difficult to stick to one organization system, because of time or your current life situation. That’s why, it’s important to do a weekly review, soyou can see and think how things have been going and how can you improve it. And try out different methods until you find the ones that wor for you.
3. Take rest times (A MUST) 💤. The same way you schedule study and classes time, you should do with the rest times. It’s important to give yourself time to relax and unwind after all the work. This could mean taking time to nap or sleep more, doing yoga, playing with your pets, get into a hobby, take a bath or meditate.
4. Get deep into hobbies 💃. Maybe you already have a hobbie, like drawing or dancing, but it’s also common to not really have one (or maybe you think you don’t have one). This time at home could be perfect to get deep into them or to create a new one. Recently, I’ve been reading more (for myself I mean, since I usually read for my thesis a lot) and dancing to Kpop around the house, since my body has the urge to move.
5. Drink water and nurture your body 🥐 . Water is really important for the body. Dehydration can cause headaches, exhaustion and even a feverish state. It’s really important to drink lots of water a day. If it’s difficult for you to keep on track with your daily water intake, you can always use an app like Plant Nanny.
Also, try to eat better and avoid junk food all that you can. For this, you can plan your weekly meals on weekends or free days and, at the same time, create a grocery list. It will save you money and time, and it will make difficult to eat badly.
6. Self-discover 🌌. Ariana Grande already said this:
You (anxiety) don't wanna leave me, but I'm tryna self-discover. Keep me in your orbit and you know you'll drag me under. - Nasa 🚀, Ariana Grande.
The confinement could play hard and be really cruel on us and our mental stability, so the quarentine is a good time to discover yourself.
For this you can:
- Read self help books. I recommend like Quiet: The Power of Introverts by Susan Cain
- Journaling
- Create mood boards to clearly see your goals in life
- Experiment with fashion and make up (If you are into it)
7. Create new habits 🌱 . By establishing a habit, and doing it with self-discipline everyday, even if it’s a small one, it’s enough to make it a habit. A good book for this is (surprise!), Atomic habits by James Clear. Also, you can track your habits with apps like Grow.
8. Find your personal style 👚. I’ve always struggled (like almost anyone I think) with finding my personal style. So, during quarentine I’ve been really observant about what I love to wear from my wardrobe, and which pictures I liked and saved more from instagram. This simple way made me see what was my style, in which i felt confident.
9. COMMUNICATE with your friends and family ☎️. You could think: ‘but I don’t have nothing to tell them’. You don’t have to tell them anything special, just asking about how they and their families are is more than enough. Caring for your loved ones is more than enough. You don’t need to be an “exciting person” (whatever that means to you).
I hope this helps you go through this difficult period. Take care and be kind with yourselves 💖 .
Small pleasures at home: Reading in bed with my favorite pajamas on.
