RiME: A Touching Experience
Normally when I look for a video game, I look for something charming, something with amazing storyline, a puzzle-based game, or perhaps one of the classics. With RiME, I thought that would be the case.
RiME is a mix of charming and adorable characters with many puzzles throughout the game, and a plot twist so unexpected that the ending still has me baffled. The developers of this game outdid themselves and I applaud everyone who worked hard to make this game possible. Thank you so much for making such a touching work of art!
Without spoiling anything for this game, I will tell you what I thought of the game. I must say, I have never thought this highly of a game, especially one that's not mainstream such as the Pokémon franchise or even any Mario games. RiME has been such a delight to play and I absolutely love it to bits.
In this game, the player is a young boy, stranded on an island and he must find a way to escape. With the help of a fox spirit guide, the player must solve puzzles in order to proceed the storyline and find out the events prior to when the player washed ashore on this island.
RiME's graphics are absolutely so stunning and aesthetically pleasing that I couldn't help but stare at the beautiful scenery in awe. In fact, the clever designs of the game made it even more enjoyable! The game itself has no dialogue, but the music throughout the game is absolutely lovely. Not only does this game tug at your heartstrings, it will definitely make you cry towards the end, guaranteed. I started to slowly realize what was happening as I proceeded to finish the game, and my god was it clever yet so emotional. The game leaves you with an amazing experience and a new viewpoint of human emotions.
I highly recommend playing RiME. I would love to do a review chocked full of my entire experience, but I want to let others play the game and be surprised for what experience this game will take them on. I have @therealjacksepticeye to thank for starting the game about two years ago. I don't wish to sound terrible by any means, but I am actually glad Seán didn't show the full game play because it sparked my interest in the game. After finally obtaining a copy, I had no idea what I was in for. If it wasn't for him, I would have never had such a touching experience. I don't know if you'll see this, but thank you so much, Jack!
Please, please, please, if you haven't played the game already and have the ability to, please do. I assure you that it will be worth your time!
RIME
Developer: Tequila Works, QLOC Publisher: Grey Box, Six Foot Rrp: £29.99 (Gog.com, Humblebundle and Steam) Released: 26th May 2017 Available on: Gog.com, Humblebundle and Steam I do love a good puzzle platformer, especially if the puzzles involve a bit of lateral thinking. Rime is definitely a game that falls under that category. It must be stated though that this title deals with some very dark themes, if you are of the sensitive persuasion (or just want to keep that good mood) perhaps don't play this game.
You play as a nameless protagonist that awakes after having been washed on to the shores of a strange island. You learn more about the island and the protagonist as you run, jump, push and examine things to solve the various puzzles. Rime tells its story without the use of words. However there are two stories at work, the characters and the lore of the island. The characters story will come to light as you play through, but the worlds lore is far more difficult to work out as its all in the environment and requires more work. The platforming is... competent, Prince of Persia this is not, but then again I wasn't expecting it to be and nor is the game trying to emulate it. If I have a complaint it's that occasionally the game seems to forget to 'grab' on to ledges. Thankfully there aren't any lives of health to lose so its not a big deal.
It's clear that the development team took some inspiration from Team Ico and Journey for this game, in fact while playing I had to double check that the game was made by anyone who has worked within Team Ico (the answer was no by the way). Generally the game as a whole is well paced but I have to say that I feel that I could have done with less repetition when it came to some of the puzzles.
This game is definitely worth taking the time to play, however I feel the price point is a bit too high for what the game provides.
