Everybody, get a grip.
The other day me and my friends were in a coffeshop, talking and dealing with some coursework. It somehow ended up being a discussion about inequality in employment, especialy when it comes to female surgeons, and how we are, from day one coded to think, that girls can't perform as well as guys on certain positions.
Explaining our point of wiew was tough and touchy in places, bc we got to the famous " Okay, but why you are telling me this?"
We told him. He promisted to help. But most of our male friends don't know that by default. So gentleman, here is The Deal.
Stand for what you belive. We can defend ourselves, that is sure as hell. But mentality is global thing. Bigger then just us, girls. So the next time you see someone belittle a female student on a ward or operating theater, don't let it slip. Support her. And never, ever be like them.
Girls, when you see something like that happening to a future nurse, teacher or dancer- defend them. They have it just as hard as us, only on different fields.
If someone is being misgendered anywhere- Make. It. Stop. No excuse for that. We are not taking this "being old" for an answer. This does not excuse your lack of respect for anybody unless you have dementia and you are not doing it on purpose.
Help eachother. Lift eachother up. Life sucks enough as it is, don't make it even worse.
Professionalism raises existential questions of authenticity and genuine connection for me. It nurtures a kind of phoniness, encouraging us to hide our humanity behind a role. I don't think thats healthy for the human spirit, and I don’t think it’s healthy for how we connect with each other either. When we relate from a place of inauthenticity, it erodes the potential for real, meaningful connection.
