Courtclaire + Hollandholly au
me and @freshwinnerkingdom were cooking up.
Takes place at No specific point in time, roughly post the events of the Gray Man and the Nice Guys.
Claire and Holly disagree. A lot. But they're still really great friends.
The same can't be said about their fathers.
Courtland tries. He really does. He can't remember he's been this pissed off. A nutjob. A nutjob who was absolutely not equipped to take care of a child was in charge of single parenting a girl who had lost her mother.
And here he was mouthing off about letting her go to porno parties and DRIVING HIS CAR while he was wipeout drunk nonetheless. Court had snapped after the third cigarette, swiping the entire packet off of March and disposing of them.
It was not worth it to start a fight here, Court reminded himself. Claire was happy. She needed kids her age.
She wanted to sleep over. At Holland March's house. Hilarious. Courtland had never hated something more.
No, was the obvious answer. He was halfway through the paperwork to serve March a court date and to try and get custody of Holly. A small but not very large chance of being shot was much better than... everything else her father had going on.
Claire wasn't happy. She wasn't allowed to do normal people things.
Courtland said she could go only if he could go too, and sleep on the ground next to her.
A myriad of things could go wrong. Holly was a child and March was an idiot. Claire jokingly said yes.
The day Courtland got the temporary custody papers due to awaiting a court date on reported neglience was the day Court sat down Claire and explained it all to her slowly.
She just hadn't been paying attention.
She was on board. Like Father like daughter.
Holland had been happy to see him. He was not happy to see the papers, or to reply to Courtland's demands to see his daughter. Courtland was bigger and stronger than him, but he didn't force his way inside.
Holland screamed like a kindergartner, tears falling down his face. Betrayal. How could they do this? Holly was all he had. Courtland did not hit him.
clear that if Holland didn't get his fucking act together, he wouldn't have her either. Courtland 'gave up'. Walked back to his car.
Holland had slammed the door as soon as he passed the palm trees, and Courtland hid for the few seconds it took Claire to lead a giggling Holly out of the woods and into the car, before he slid in through the window and went pedal to the metal.
It was a stupid sleepover Claire had told her. Her dad didn't care anway.
She wanted to go home the second day she stayed there. Missed her dad. Courtland understood. Claire shook her head, not letting her.
She started freaking out.
Courtland had the same talk with her.
She reacted far more negatively than Claire had.
It wasn't permanent. But Courtland knew. Courtland knew the only way people would shape up is if they lost everything and had a slim chance to get it back.
