ryland sat across from you in the lab, nervously looking over the mugs of cup noodles, half empty bottle of vodka from your dead coworker, and the NASA approved space dessert that'd come wrapped in foil and surprisingly turned out to be outer space approved strawberry shortcake.

god, he knew it wasn't much.

he knew that you liked things like espresso drinks and coffee from cute, cozy stores and homemade pastries and gourmet dinners that you could bake at home by tossing everything in a greased pan.

but, hell, he was trying. he'd been trying ever since you two were sedated and sent into space.

and by god did you love dr. ryland grace for the man he was.

"i couldn't find much that wasn't the standard MRI equivalent for space food, ya know?" he chuckled sadly. "it's ok if you don't want to eat—"

Simon has a taste for me-burgers and occasionally eats them raw and Rocky is very displeased by the fact that one of the animals in the enclosure has a pronounced taste for the other’s raw flesh.

Grace definitely cried when he tried the Simon-Salmon TM for the first time after too many years of the same exact food. Verity!!!

While the timeline is different in the movie than it is in the book, I honestly appreciate the changes because it puts so much more at stake, and having Grace choose not to go home and instead send the beetles while he goes to save Rocky from the Astrophage in his engines is so important to me.

Also, seeing Grace get sedated in the movie, versus him just being apprehended in the book, was the best decision. In the book, we do get Grace feeling betrayed and taken advantage of and feeling angry. But in the movie, seeing Grace run from the doctor and sprint as fast as he could to only get taken down and put out of his misery was heartbreaking. His last memories of Earth were of the ground. Carl — another appreciated added detail to the movie (the Lowe's scene was so funny) — standing there, not helping but giving a few last words of encouragement, even if they landed quite flat given the circumstances.
