Oklahoma crewmen with evacuee children on a ship off of Bilboa, Spain in Aug 1936. "That summer, (the ship) carried midshipmen on a European training cruise, visiting northern ports. The cruise was interrupted by the outbreak of civil war in Spain, (& the) Oklahoma sailed to Bilbao, arriving on July 24, 1936, to rescue American citizens and other refugees whom she carried to Gibraltar and French ports. She returned to Norfolk on Sept. 11th... On returning to the West coast in August of the same year, Oklahoma spent the rest of her service in the Pacific." ----- "(Five years later, tragically,) on Dec. 7, 1941, Oklahoma was sunk by several torpedoes during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor... Survivors jumped off the ship... or crawled across mooring lines that connected the Oklahoma and the Maryland. Some people inside the ship escaped when rescuers came and drilled holes and opened hatches to take them out. When the ship sank, a total of 429 crew died when she capsized in Battleship Row. In 1943, Oklahoma was righted and salvaged. Unlike most of the other battleships that were recovered following Pearl Harbor, the Oklahoma was too damaged to return to duty." (Personally, I wonder if these sailors were still serving on the Oklahoma when Pearl Harbor was attacked; I hope not. “On Oct 3, 1935, Haile Selassie’s nation was invaded by (Mussolini’s Fascist) Italian troops on two fronts after more than a year of border violations by Italy. Haile Selassie personally directed campaigns against the Italian troops in northern Abyssinia, but the better equipped Italian troops, coupled with the willingness to deploy chemical weapons, frustrated the Abyssinian Emperor. After a series of defeats, Haile Selassie fled from the capital of Addis Ababa on May 2, 1936 to neighboring Djibouti, from which he boarded a British ship for Palestine (now Israel). Later in that year, he addressed the League of Nations, successful in convincing the League of Nations, which already accused Italy as the aggressor in the conflict, to impose sanctions on Italy. “What answer shall I take back to my people?” He asked the League of Nations during his speech. “It is us today, it will be you tomorrow”, he predicted if the League of Nations permits Italian aggression. The sanctions imposed by the League of Nations, however, was partial and rather ineffective in deterring Italian aggression. For one, oil did not appear in the list of boycotted items. Despite of his failure to gather international support for his country at the League of Nations, he became a symbol of Anti-Facism in Africa, and became Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year” for 1936.“ (By, C.
