Shadowing Physicians as a Pre-med ~ How and Where?
Hope you had an awesome Christmas! I am so ready for the new year! :)Â
Now, I wanted to talk about how to get shadowing opportunities. I did not have much guidance as a pre-med on where to find shadowing opportunities. It does help if you have some sort of connection to the medical profession. No one in my family even went to college. So, totally not in my world.Â
Anyway, these are some lessons I learned about getting shadowing opportunities.Â
1. Start early - The great thing about shadowing is that you do not need any âmedicalâ knowledge. Just curious and enthusiastic about learning about being a physician. You can even get start before entering college! I would recommend this extracurricular be the first thing that you do. If you are unsure about being a physician, this one will really show you.Â
2. Ask your own physician - Yep, ask you or your family physician. It really helps. The worst they can say is âno.â But, even if they do, they will probably know some other physician who does taken in pre-meds. Even trying asking the physician your close family members go to.Â
3. Cold-call physiciansâ offices. I did try handing out my resumes to receptionists and emailing physicians at a academic hospital. Honestly, this did not work best for me. I probably called/e-mailed 40 physicians and did not receive many answers.
