Specifically if dogs are able to settle into two different "training styles" by two different people? or could it be species specific?

Example: I have a Keeshond Mix and he only really relies on me and another person living in the house, but we both have very differing opinions about his training... The other person recently brought up that the dog would "be able to differentiate between me and them," but I heard dogs really "only" have the cognitive abilities of about a 3-year-old (not to say dogs can't be smart but to say he's cognitively able as much as a human, another animal by the way, would be an overstatement), so would he really be able to do that?
