Quite some work was done on the upgrade menu since the beginning, but it was always time consuming. Now, thanks to Unityâs new prefab system, I was able to get to this point much easier than it would be otherwise!
PS: The picture above has a much lower quality because itâs an old screenshot of a small game window and it is all I have from the old menu, but enough to see the difference :)

Using Prefabs in Cogmindâs Map Generation
Josh Ge, the developer of the roguelike Cogmind (and X@Com) posted a writeup about the use of prefabs in Cogmindâs map generator, and I thought it would be a great springboard to talk about the use of prefabs in general.
Iâve mentioned them before in Dungeon Crawl, but ADOM, Angband, Spelunky, and other roguelikes also make heavy use of vaults/prefab elements. Itâs one way to make stuff stand out from the oatmeal and introduce statistical spikes to break things up.
Josh gives us an in-depth look at how you can implement a generator that incorporates prefabs. It includes big level-defining anchors added at the start and room-defining presets applied after the basic layout is in place for more interesting encounters. Note that the prefab templates allow for a lot of variation (like Spelunkyâs rooms) including rotating and mirroring.
Cogmind uses the prefabs to implement encounters and tactical challenges, which is a smart application of the technique. Using prefabs in this way can be thought of as a generalization of action set-pieces in more conventional level design. Rather than laying out the specifics of one unique encounter, you can describe the general parameters of the challenge and let the player encounter many variations. (Spelunky uses this to great effect.)
Prefabs are also a way to add landmarks. Itâs difficult to make a map generator that has unique content that stands out enough to avoid being lost in the mush, but otherwise bland content makes for excellent connective tissue between the more unique landmarks that grab attention.
Another way to get unique landmarks is to have multiple generators, with a few being rarely invoked, as with biome generator. But prefabs are cheaper and can be combined with other techniques. Particularly if your prefabs can have other generators nested inside them.
The encounter system also touches on something else Iâve been thinking about lately: generating abstract systems. Games and simulations usually have a lot of invisible systems that arenât directly reflected in the visible map space: tech trees, combat rock-paper-scissors relationships, economic systems, and so on. But, with a few exceptions, these are not things that procedural generation is commonly used to make.
But thereâs no reason not to use procedural generation to make them. Indeed, many of the biggest procedural generation games have precisely the weakness that their generation is visible and physical, but that the gameplay systems arenât subject to the same variation. Procedurally-generated gameplay is an under-explored area.

Because traditional construction makes a total hard to predict with complete accuracy, the duo founded a prefab company in 2019, Tini Living, which offers six models that can be arranged in different ways to create bespoke homes. And the pricing is all up front.Now, the company is shipping its homes to the United States. Their latest project, in Segovia, Spain, actually bridges the gap between Europe and the States by referencing Los Angelesâs Case Study Houses. It combines several units to form an elongated, steel-framed plan thatâs inspired by California modernism."Our philosophy has always been clear: true luxury is not about grand gestures, but about quiet, essential presence," says de la Vega. "A home should embrace, not interrupt. Every Tini project reflects this ethos with pure lines, noble materials, fluid transitions between inside and out, and a process thatâs as transparent as it is livable." Hereâs how Tini Living says it plans to deliver on that promise."After years of developing bespoke projects with our industrialized construction system, we have poured everything weâve learned into a series of carefully designed, optimized, and replicable houses," says architect Ignacio de la Vega. The first Case Studyâinspired home from Tini Living is located in Segovia, Spain.What qualities make your prefab designs stand apart from others? We believe that designing a home means designing a way of living. At Tini Living, we donât offer products, we offer a way of making architecture with honesty, permanence, and purpose. After years of developing bespoke projects with our industrialized building system, we have distilled everything weâve learned into a series of optimized, replicable homes. The property is surrounded by mature oaks and red-earth ravines, and de la Vega and Cano-Lasso wanted the home to reflect that. The 1,830-square-foot structure was built in a factory and the walls were whitewashed on-site.We believe these houses are designed to the highest architectural standardsâfar from traditional prefab catalogs, and close in spirit to the Case Study Houses. Each model is conceived as a "case study" thatâs proportioned, oriented, and connected to the landscape. This approach offers access to thoughtful architecture through a fast, technically supported process. Lastly, weâve developed our own industrial method based on a steel frame, building information modeling (BIM), full in-factory manufacturing, and total cost control, and we work with high-quality local materials and advanced insulation systems to ensure maximum energy efficiency. "Oak and cork flooring add warmth, texture, and a sense of calm," de la Vega says.Beyond this new home outside Madrid, whatâs another of your favorite projects? One of our most emblematic projects, and one that perfectly reflects our vision of serene architecture, is Tini Menorca. Built entirely in our factory in just 100 days and installed on-site in one day, it was awarded the 2025 MATCOAM Prize for innovative architectural rigor. The home is located on a sloping site in Menorca and is designed in a T-shape to maximize natural light and views of the Mediterranean. It respects the vegetation by integrating trees into the architectural flow, and applies passive systems such as pergolas for shading and natural ventilation. The clients love how the design merges with the landscape and creates a peaceful, light-filled retreat. Cubro Design created custom fronts for the kitchenâs Ikea cabinetry.What does your base model cost and what does that pricing include?  Our pricing varies depending on the size of the project and the finishes selected. Typically, the cost starts at around âŹ2,800 per square meter, which is approximately $305 per square foot. We aim to offer clarity and transparency in pricing, which our clients deeply appreciate. A full-height window beside the kitchen and living space frames a garden. A Pummba sofa provides a spot to lounge.Where are your homes currently available?We build in our own factories in Spain. For international projects, including in the United States, we manage the entire shipping process to ensure quality and control.Are any of your prefab designs currently pre-permitted in any U.S. municipalities?Our designs comply with U.S. regulations, and our construction system has successfully passed certification processes in California and New York.The kitchen and dining area has wraparound views of the surrounding forest.How long can a client expect the process to take after they put down a deposit? The first step is the design phase. Once the design contract is signed, we assign a dedicated teamâincluding architects, engineers, and technical expertsâwho will accompany the client throughout the entire process. After finalizing the design, we manage state-level certifications through authorized agencies, and then build the Tini in just 100 days. Our clients often highlight speed and predictability as key benefits. A small office sits between the common area and three bedrooms.What aspects of an install do you manage? We work with local partners in the U.S. who help us provide a full-service installation. They handle local permitting and coordinate qualified contractors to complete all necessary site work, including foundation installation and electrical and water hookups. This allows us to deliver a seamless and integrated process for our clients. One of the bedrooms has private access to an outdoor deck.What aspects of the design can a client customize? Clients can customize the facade, interior wall and floor materials, and equipment such as wardrobes, bathroom fixtures, and HVAC systems.
