Newton was investigating the nature of light and optics when he decided to experiment on himself. He details in his notebook how he inserted a bodkin, (a long flat needle), into his eyesocket to “as neare to backside of my eye as I could”. . The spacesuits worn on the Apollo 11 mission were designed by Playtex. Playtex started their bid to make the NASA suit in 1961 when JFK declared America's intention to land on the moon. Although known for making bras, girdles and other intimates, Playtex was the brand name of the International Latex Corporation, which also had a small industrial product division. Spacesuits had to protect the wearer from extreme heat and coldness, as well the lack of oxygen, radiation and the rough environment on the moon's surface. Focus had been on hard shell spacesuits, but Playtex's suggestion allowed more flexibility, so astronauts were more free to move around. Neil Armstrong described the suit as "reliable", "cuddly" and "photogenic" - which considering the moon landing was watched by 500 million people was a good thing.
