Morning light puppers
Backyard sunset with Omie
I uncovered a secret chicken nest among my sunchokes while weed whacking yesterday, but left the eggs to deal with later. This morning they were gone - all 7 of them. It was outside the fence, so some varmint got a feast last night. Possibly there is a very lumpy black snake sleeping it off in the woods.
The young hens are starting to lay - first olive eggs!

Evidence of my willow work, and how big/wild I've let them get before this first proper cut back. Plus bonus black hen.
I went to count chickens & do final egg check around dusk, and it's been rainy all day so it was especially dim. So I'm putting my hands in nest boxes, and I feel. Not. Eggshell. Where it sure looked like Egg should be.
It turned out to be one of those shell-less eggs, just a hiccup in a hen's egg-construction system, something that happens sometimes. But that was unsettling to put my hand on, when I expected a very different feeling.
Found another fallen bird's nest in my yard, not quite as tiny as the last one.
