#plant progress

I decided to sow some more plants directly; I'd forgotten to germinate my ground cherries in January, so I'm doing it now, they need a while to grow. I also decided to sow more onions, because the last batch is doing so well, and if this year is the year I am blessed with being able to grow onions, I better grow as many as possible. I then also did another pot of basil because you need lots of basil in life, and a little sunflower just because I thought it would be cute.

The two pots wrapped in a plastic bag are the ground cherries and basil; those seeds are so tiny and have to be sown very close to the surface, which means there's a real danger of them drying out, and it happened to me many times before that I missed the top layer getting dry. Putting those in a plastic bag means they cannot dry out, it's going to be nice and humid in there, and I'll just remove the bag once the plants are out of the soil.

Next, I realized this specific cup of tomato plants has overgrown its size! I'm surprised by how quickly it happened, no other plant has been this successful, these babies are growing like crazy. In support of this insane behaviour I'm gonna transplant them to individual pots so they can continue doing as well!

I've gently pushed the entire soil out of the pot, pulled it apart so that each tomato plant was still holding onto some soil, it's very good for them to have soil attached when transplanting! And then they each got their personal big cup. I've decided that the widest cup was big enough for two plants, so I've divided it with a piece of cardboard; this way two plants can grow in it without their roots tangling together.

And then I also found another baby plant in there that isn't basil, that grew on it's own, and judging by the little needles I see there, and the shape of the leaf, I think this might be baby nettle! I've never seen nettle in such baby form, isn't she adorable? I must have brought the seed from the forest. Using soil from the forest does result in some random forest plants popping up and I love it! Forest plants do grow faster than cultivated ones so I just need to make sure I transplant them before they take over the pot.

Look at how well the onions are doing! This phase makes me so nervous because they look like the tops have dried out, which makes me feel like I haven't watered enough, but no, this happens to everyone, in fact tutorials have shown that at a stage like this you're supposed to cut off the tops, but I don't wanna, that feels wrong, I'm not confident that it would help the plants, I don't wanna prune. I wanna see what happens if I leave it be.
