Favorite line of narration?I bet you expected something vaguely nsfw, but joke’s on you, because I love the line Various doctors declared it to be ill humour, or the advancement of age; but Francis could not very well explain to them that he spent most of his meals not trying very hard to avoid James’s feet under the table, and that therefore ill humour was not a concern.

11. What do you like best about this fic?As you know this was my first M-rated fic, so I’m still rather proud of the sections which earned that rating. Who would have guessed it’d be such an effective gateway drug? (You did. You guessed.)

Raleigh places a mug of Tendo’s spirits in Mako’s waiting hand, tilting his chin towards the far side of the room as he settles beside her. “I thought they hated each other?”

Those two K-Science doctors are speaking wearily but animatedly, adjoining from shoulder to hip to knee, and had been that way since the four of them had been released from medbay and wandered their separate ways to the impromptu celebration milling on the Shatterdome floor.

“What makes you say that?”

“I’ve only ever seen them going at each other.”

Mako brings her cup down abruptly and emits a kind of half-snort, half-giggle.  Raleigh does a double-take, staring hard at Geiszler and Gottlieb, who have separated, but only so that Gottlieb can take Geiszler at half-arm’s length and gently examine his eye.

Realization dawns. “No,” he says.

“Oh, yes,” Mako replies, a glint in her eye. “At least, we think so. I have never actually seen proof. But that doesn’t mean much.” She shrugs. “Rivalry, passion. Anger, love. These are not so different.”

Raleigh looks on a moment longer.  Gottlieb drops his hand, and within the span of an inward breath, Geiszler has pitched forward to rest his forehead against Gottlieb’s. And when Gottlieb’s whole body slumps with his sigh, Raleigh has to look away.

The fingers curved inward, first spokes to slay him and then the walls of a jail and then, worst of all, just fingers, blunt like human digits, curling onto the palm, because Nazara was the ship and the ship was (the?) Sovereign, and Saren was grasped within it, a splinter sunk into the flesh.
