A male Japanese Green Woodpecker (Picus awokera) is apparently drinking sap from a maple tree. An endemic species found from Honshu and southwards, it is one of the largest woodpeckers in Karuizawa (the similarly sized White-backed Woodpecker is rarely encountered locally). In this forest, sap flowed from maples here and there, attracting other birds such as Brown-eared Bulbuls, Warbling White-eyes, and Azure-winged Magpies.

カエデ類の樹液を飲んでいるらしいアオゲラのオス。 日本固有種で軽井沢では最大級のキツツキ（オオアカゲラも似たサイズだが、当地ではめったに出会えない）。 この林ではあちこちのカエデから樹液が流れており、ヒヨドリやメジロ、オナガなどもやってきていた。
